Just noticed this tapping/ticking sound recently and as far as I can tell it's only when the car's up to temperature. I had the cambelt, aux. belt, dephaser and water pump changed in the last 300 miles or so at SWR in Stirling.

  • Hard to notice, if at all, with the bonnet lifted from the outside or with the windows down. It's much clearer from the inside with the windows up
  • It rises with the revs up to a point (then it's hard to tell if it's still there or not) but it's not all that loud
  • After pulling up and letting the car idle it doesn't immediately make the sound, takes a short while, around 20 seconds say, before it starts doing it.

I have no speakers on computer at work so can't watch the video but mine taps loudly from the carbon canister behind the o/s headlight. It sounds bloody terrible and apparently the fix is a new one for a million quid, disconnect/bin it and bodge the wiring to stop a warning light or live with it.

I'm lazy so I live with it. Mine doesn't do it on a cold start so much but all the time the rest of the time and if you grab hold of it while the car's running you can feel whatever it is inside (minions?) ticking.

They can also tap from the injectors if it definitely isn't the dephaser.

I read about the carbon cannister briefly and listened close to the headlight but could barely make out the sound.

I'm sure i read that this is normal according to someone over on cliosport.net and is simply due to noisy injectors. Not 100% sure though tbh.

VVT camshaft pulley is suspect on Renault engines. Does it go when the engines revved hard

That's not injectors. That's more of a tapping sound that you can't hear inside the car. I would have said dephaser as its only doing it when up to temp.

Op. Where did you get the belts done? Was it a specialist? Could be the timing?

SWR in Stirling, highly recommended Renault specialist.

It doesn't sound like it's coming from the engine itself to be honest, it's more noticeable if I get down on the ground around the centre of the car.

Someone on cliosport said there's made a similar sound when the manifold to car gasket was shot.

Sorry for not seeing this sooner? Did you get it sorted?

I had the entire length of exhaust inc the manifold replaced on my 172 and it never sounded like that. It sounded loud and blowing plus youll smell it in the cabin. Exhaust problems... Got to love renault. Cracked manifold. Oh the memories! Also nearly getting bent over by renault for £900 for a cat. Thank god mark fish had one on his shelf and only wanted £200!

Mine always did it as you described - before and after the 2 full belt & accessory services I gave it (one from a Renault dealer, the other from SWR).

From driver seat sounded like it was approximately behind speedo in engine bay. Maybe at about 8 taps per second at warm idle after 20 seconds, then it would speed up proportionately with revs until you couldn't hear it above around 1300 rpm IIRC. I wouldn't worry.

If it's blown up in the last couple of months I apologise biggrin

Put Clio dephaser pulley into YouTube and have a listen to those. See if it's anything like yours

Nah it's more of a light tappety sound, not the full on diesel-like noise a knackered dephaser makes.

Given the dephaser's been replaced I'd be extremely miffed if that was suspect.

Patrick, did you ever find the cause?
In my case it's coming from the top of the engine, close to cylinder #4.
The ticking sound comes and goes.

No but I'd suspect the carbon cannister.

It's been 9 years/50k milesand it still does it so it's certainly not important!
