Hi all!

I have a 2006 Renault Clio Mk3 with the 1.2 16v 'Extreme' (still not sure why they call it that!) and I have been having a problem... The car has done 60,000 miles now, and just last week I found the handbrake sticking on. I had pulled up at my College, left it there for about 4 hours, then when I went to pull away, it felt bogged down and I quickly realised that it was the handbrake getting stuck on. I made it down the road where it was safe to stop and the smell and heat coming off the right rear brake drum was immense. After a quick phone call to my dad, I managed to put the car in reverse and this freed the handbrake, before nursing it home to have a further look.

Once we had taken off the rear drum, we found that the coating along the handbrake cable had started to fret along the inside of the drum, and had split, which was causing it to get caught in the spring as it moved up and down when the handbrake was in use and it was also the main cause of it sticking. The only fix would be to get a new handbrake cable, preferably for both sides. This is the bigger problem though. After looking online, I can't find the correct cables... As it is a drum brake, I need the handbrake cable with the spring, but I can only find this for the right hand side, and not the left where the brake is sticking. All of the left side ones have no springs at all! So I am wondering whether you guys will know the solution? Where can I find the correct cables, either singular or as a kit, that are both compatible with the drum brakes? How much of a difference is there between the two sides of cable too?

Another slight problem I have is that the handbrake cable on my car is blue on left and black on right, but all of the online images show yellow on left, blue on right?!

Thanks!

I think its because it is an "Extreme"-ly low spec car!
