Hi Guys,

Recently purchased a Renault Megane 265 with Cup Chassis and from day one I have not felt comfortable with the brakes. When braking from say 70/80 you get a slight juddering sensation coming through the pedal, I have also felt that the actual stopping power is not fantastic.

However Renault are looking at it but are currently saying that nobody can feel anything wrong, its been to Renault Slough and it is now back at Renault West London where I bought from. So other than the possibility that I am whining about a non-existent problem, can anybody tell me whether the brakes on a 2014 Renault 265 with Cup Chassis should have grooved discs or not as the literature seems to suggest that grooved discs are part of the pack however my car does not have grooved discs??

Thanks for any input, when I spoke to Renault they simply said that the discs on the car were the standard discs for it.

I`ve had this from warped discs but that has also been felt with low pedal pressure at very low speeds too but I have also had exactly what you are describing from "pad transfer" where the cure was to COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY clean the discs (I think they used wire wool to do it) this did completely cure the judder however my pad transfer judder was felt mostly through the steering wheel where as my warped discs have always been felt through the pedal!

Thanks.

My issue at the minute is Renault I saying there's nothing wrong, and as the car has the Cup Chassis if I knew that it would have come from the factory with grooved discs it would further backup my claim, however how they can't feel it I have no idea, maybe my feet are more sensitive than most frown

How many miles? and how many miles have you done in it since you bought it?

Maybe the previous owner was a track fiend, warped the original set and whacked on some cheaper ones before selling it?

I had the same and it turned out that somehow one of the pins that holds the pad in had bent. No idea what caused it as replaced the pins and it has solved the issue.

Also this was not obvious without using a straight edge on the pin.

The cars done 10,000 miles, it was an ex-management car so I daresay it's had its fair share of abuse, Renault West London have had it back and are basically saying there's not a problem frown

I have to say I can feel the faint grumble through the pedal still so I'm 100% sure the brakes are not completely right, and yes if I knew for SURE the car would have been supplied with grooved discs then I would push the issue but as nobody seems to know for sure I guess I'll just have to suck it up!

I`m SURE that if you asked K-tec Racing they would be able to tell you what it should have originally been supplied with!

A good MOT garage will be able to measure the run-out on the discs to see if they are warped. My MOT man told me my Mustang discs were warped without me telling him.
Renault prices aren't cheap so they may be bluffing it out.

I'm 99.9% that 250/265 with cup chassis did have grooved discs. Tbh they would probably just make more noise/pedal vibration

Maybe you need to try another 265 to try it out. If a Renault tech can't find a fault I imagine there isn't one, but why not fit new pads and discs and see if that cures it?

Depends on just how bad you think it is??

The grooved discs do cause noise and a bit of maybe vibration/roughness and yes EVERY mk3 RS with the Cup Chassis came with grooved discs, they only stopped supplying grooved discs with the 275 Trophy. We're yet to see if they start supplying grooved discs with the soon to come 275 cup-s or whatever it's called.

The OEM pads are a bit pap, might be worth trying some others but it's also worth mentioning that if you've come from a car with a lot of braking assistance they can 'feel' a bit crap as they don't have much assistance like for example VAG cars that bite quite hard often with little pressure.
