I have had my Pug 208 GTI for shade under a year and took it in for its first service today.

It has only done 3800 miles so I was expecting just a standard first service with nothing extra.

The garage has called to say that a new air filter is needed - £70 plus VAT. Not a great deal of money but I am a bit surprised - surely an air filter should last longer than 12 months/3800 miles?

Would this be worth querying or is it just one of those consumable that could go at any time?

It's something that I expect to be changed annually, admittedly your mileage is low but it wont hurt. But £70+VAT is extortionate, the part is no more than £15.

Price is a bit steep, if the filter change is part of the service schedule then fine but no way I'd pay £70 for one.

I'd be very surprised if it actually needs changing unless you live on a building site or somewhere equally dusty/mucky.

Air filter is a service item at every service just as an oil filter is. 70quid is ridiculous though. I just paid 40quid for a K&n for an impreza.

This doesn't sound right? do they not mean the plastic air filter housing is broken or whatever? An air filter element is only about £10 - £15 and would certainly NOT need replacing at a year/3K ? also you can't see it without removing it and that's not part of a first service.
Unless Peugeot have changed the service schedules for these GTi`s,the air filter element is replaced at 40K or 4 years whichever comes first.

Any source for that? Sounds wrong to me. Most manufacturers services have an air filter annually.

It's every 40,000 miles on my Golf GTi.

Haven't been able to find anything on the net for the 208 GTi but yearly seems excessive unless you live in a dusty/sandy climate.

I had my own Peugeot Independent workshop for 24 years.(now retired)
All petrol models Peugeot say service every 20000 or two years. The first 20K is just a oil and filter service, the 40K (or 4 years)is air, plugs etc.Ridiculous yes,but that's Peugeot. And why people came to me instead of a Peugeot Dealer.

Thanks for all the replies. I will query this with the garage - if it is needed, then fine but the price seems a bit optimistic!

DS3 air filter replacement schedule is every 40,000 miles; I would assume that's the norm for all PSA engines.
