A little update - after sitting on my driveway since it failed the MOT, I finally pulled my finger out this weekend - stuck a new battery in and called in a favour from a friend, so it’s just left on a truck and is heading for Engine Dynamics in the morning thumbup

what did it fail on ?

is it at engine dynamics for a cambelt change or are you turboing it ?

You won't be disappointed sending it to Engine Dynamics, they know what they are doing, definitely worth more than 1k, seen a couple of low mileage examples go for good money recently and can only see them going up as they get rarer. I have a 172 cup but not a lot of cup left in it but for a standard, low mileage example with history and recent belts you will do well

Failed the MOT as the power steering fluid pissed out all over the garage floor when they were doing the test laugh

Going in for dephaser pulley, cambelt and water pump etc etc and also get the power steering sorted (hoping it’s just a hose that’s popped).

My old cup had a leaky power steering pump , pretty sure i got a used replacement of e.bay and had to send my old one back to them to recondition and sell on.

Bet you a quid it's the pressure sensor on the return line that's popped. Cheap and easy if it is and loads of access especially with the belts off.

I still miss my Clio.

I’ll take that bet and will be delighted to pay out if that is the case 👍

Just think of all this work as investment. I sold mine on similar mileage for £4,800 a few months ago so I'm sure you'll get your money back! Will only continue to rise in value in my eyes if you keep it standard.

Ah balls. Could be worse though, there's a power steering line that runs around the back of the block and needs the engine removing to get to it! Put a new pump on mine too and I think it was about £150 for a new one from Renault? It was a right ball ache to change though, I still have nightmares about it.

Nope, clean low mileage examples are seemingly very sought after these days. And given that the 172 Cup was the last production hot hatch not to have ABS/traction control, I think it has some prominence about it too. Wish I had the space to keep it as I can see these being the next 205. Just don't make them like they used to and all that!

This is one of the main reasons I'm hanging on to mine, that & I love the bloody thing too much to sell it!

Think ED are charging me about £250 all in all but that does include something else that it needs (can’t remember what though), plus fluids plus some extra labour on top of what they are charging me to do the dephaser, cambelt, water pump etc etc.

I’d rather pay someone to do it properly and a lot of the gubbins were already out of the way.

Edit - was a PS pressure switch that needed replacing as well.

I bought this car from Ben back in September 2017 and whilst yes there were cheaper examples about, they were cheaper for a reason. This one is very clean and straight, low mileage, extensive service history with no expense spared. As soon as I saw it I had to own it. It simply doesn't look or feel like a 15 year hatchback and still pulls strong.

I'm aware for my £4800 I could have bought something far newer or safer but for me there was nothing out there with the presence, history or sheer fun factor. I've wanted one of these since I first laid eyes on it back in 2002 as a 20 year old craving a hot hatch. I thought to myself that if I didn't own one now then I 'd never have the chance to own one that looked and drove so well.

I'm hoping that this car's value goes up over time and with so few in standard spec I think I'm in with a chance. In truth I know that you don't buy a car as an investment and I bought it to live out a fantasy from my youth, have fun and meet fellow pistonheads at Sunday Services.

To me this is the last of the analogue hot hatch generation and many of the new models just leave me feeling cold.

Well, mine started misfiring on the way to it's MoT test yesterday so I cancellled the test & got it to my local garage this morning.

They've just called to say there is oil in 1 spark plug tube (not unusual, cam cover gasket weeping) and water in another yikes Nobody is quite sure where that water came from but it has rusted the plug so must've been there a while.

The plug leads have been shorting against the inlet manifold & the coil pack is cracked!

so it needs: 4 x plugs, 4 x leads, coil pack, cam cover gasket & ilet manifold gasket. It better pass the bloody MoT after that (it isn't going to, the rear brakes are shot)!

Still, not bad considering it's only needed a new battery in the last few years.

Finally got the old girl out on the road today. Dephaser etc done, rear disks & pads done, headlights done, rear lights (hopefully) sorted.

It got a bit of a wash today so thought I’d take a pic or two.

Just got a few dents and (quite) a bit of paintwork to sort and it’ll be looking lovely. Wheels need a refurb too.

I have to say that I t is a COMPLETE hoot to drive. Really brought a smile to my face. Going to be using it a lot more hopefully.

Just the TVR to sort out next....rolleyes
