ive been offered one for next to nothing, the bodyworks in good shape and its fully loaded, climate,electric leather seats, cd changer, cruise control-basiclly everything you could need, was just wondering what thier like performance wise and are there any chips/tuning products available for this engine as 150 BHP seems a bit of a poor show.

Its a poor showing on the power front, i have nothing listed for the 406 SRi
Good engine for a 205 though

It's no wonder there's not much info about, the turboed 406s are rarer than hen's teeth. I had 406 2.0 n/a and that was a lovely solid comfortable car to drive.

I had one.. it was quite quick, but buts fell off every week.

Good fun to drive though.

Afaik they have no intercooler as standard.

Bung a chiller on and remap will probably see early 200bhp kind of power.

Some "pug" tuners use this engine in things like 306's and get upto 300bhp, but you won't want that anyway in a fwd saloon


Just a "better" more flexible 2.0 NA really, the V6 was the one for speed.

i only thought about it as its a practical giveaway, although i have no idea about adding an intercooler on though or which would be appropiate for the car.



Vixpy i think thats just french cars in general mate

To be honest when bits are not falling off, and you give them TLC, they are hard to beat in my opinion. Looks and driving/handling are very nice in my 306 for example, and they are pretty cheap for what you get and easy to work on. I think for £3500 the best Golf derv I could get would look crap and drive like crap low-spec jobbie.

Would never own one if I didn't have the time and ability to be tinkering with cars though!

Engines very smooth to drive, but as standard they're a bit limp. Technically gutsy enough but its a long flat torque curve so its not all that fun. Decent strong gearboxes though, they use the ML5T off the 2.1TD models.
I had a Xantia Activa a while back with the same 2.0 Turbo lump....went and bough an MBC for it for about £25, plumbed it in and a monster was born! A friend did a similar thing and pulled 207bhp on the dyno with the MBC and a panel filter! Only thing is don't wind it too far out, the ECU will only allow a certain amount of boost and if you exceed it the K light comes on and it automatically limits you to safety boost.

These engines tend to be one of the main conversion in 205's after mi's, they are 150 bhp standard which makes a quickish 205. The only problem with tuning is that with the standard ecu the boost can't be run at over 1 bar without running lean and knackering the engine. But as far as i know 180-190bhp is relatively easily achievable with minor mods.

Had one in the late 1990s and did 50k in it. Engine has strong mid range (177lb.ft) but a strangled top end so hence the very lackluster power figure.... no point in going much above 5000rpm. However, in regular driving it proved to be a very swift and comfortable car, with good steering and fine handling. That was when the car was 1 year old - so this one may not exhibit all those characteristics! Also had the same engine on a 605 (I used to be a bit of a Peugeot nut, but no more), but it cracked its turbo housing. However, once the turbo was replaced I took that engine on to 140k miles before I sold it. I believe the car ultimately reached 190k before it was scrapped. Hence those engines last even if the rest of the car (esp. electrics and trim) crumbles around you!
