Another vote for buy one with good body work and replace everything else on a rolling schedule. Have done so myself and now have a very nice car (worth more to me than the sale price) despite it being high mileage and no service history.

You can ask aroun on www.205GTiDrivers.com but TBH member cars don't come available that often. You should be able to find people who can tell you where to look and what to look for though.

RUN AWAY from anything that just gti's have touched. From what I've seen and heard they#re a bunch of cowboys. Expect filler by the bucket load and a light dust over spray job to hide any faults.

i have no experience (good or bad) with just gtis but they seem to be expensive. if you source the right car and have the inclination, you could build a very nice car for half that. sure there will always be people who want a concours car but in my opinion, no 205 GTI was in concours condition when it left the factory back in France. having started to strip mine you can see where the factory have covered up things! all the parts are readily available from the internet, places like gsf and eurocarparts are also useful. they are not difficult cars to work on.

justgtis seem to prey on the people who want a 205 GTI that looks shiny and new and are willing to pay a preimum to get such a car but remember that you are paying top end prices for a french built car in the 80s which has always been prone to reliability issues such as elecctrics. its like a company offering shiny secondhand TVRs at above market prices, would you really pay the money?! for £4250, i would want evidence of a photographic rebuild of every major mechanical component either refrurbished or replaced, engine, suspension, gearbox, brakes and rear beam.

You can get a nice 205 for a grand with a bit of looking, check out my post in readers cars if you want to see what you can get for that money.

Best places I've found to look are Autotrader, Ebay and this site. 205GTIDrivers is great for all the info you could ever want but there's not that many cars advertised on the forums at any one time.

always loved the cars - I couldn't bear using it every day!! (a slow car nowadays that is rattly and fiddly with no driver comforts would wind me up using it all the time, but I love the car, what it represents and its history as well as the looks.

wouldn't use it often, only on very rare (and sunny) sundays.

Agreed, but if you said you don't drive it because it breaks a lot then I'd let you off!

Buy the cleanest bodywork-wise one that you can find for >£1k. Then spend £2-3k (tops) replacing every mechanical part. Job done. Mint 205 for >£4k

as the man says, spot on advice. they are quite easy cars to work on and most of the parts if not all are readily available.

mint cars are very hard to find and sellers charge a premium just because the gtis are quite rare but that premium does not, in my mind, offer anything like value for money.

i have seen them for sale advertised at £5K which is barking given the reputation for rot and faults, for that money i would want a photographic rebuild or a car with delivery mileage.

I would look for a car with a sound rear (chances are any crash/off has been oversteer induced) as the front panels are easily sourced and just replace parts accordingly. You can then uprate certain parts as necessary. eBay is pretty good for the hard to find parts and unless you are determined to make it as it left the factory, you should be able to build a nice car for £2K
Ummm, you mention reputation for rot. Thats one thing they don't have as far as I was aware, being galvanized and everything...

Correct, rot is really rare. Not that they never rot just they generally don't. I believe very early examples weren't galvanised though but you se VERY few of these around now, I'm thinking pre-86 or 87ish.

Sounds like water is getting in the rear window seal and collecting below. Pull out the rear side trim and you'll see. Lifting the carpet may reveal more. They all go there if you don't replace the window rubbers.
