There's one for sale up the road from work, just parked up on the grass outside a cottage. It's a G reg, done 108k but the MOT and tax have expired. If it runs OK then I'm thinking of getting it just for the engine ready to go in my 205 Gti track car at some point. I haven't really got the space to store it so would probably brake it up straight away and just store the engine and gearbox and stuff in the back of the garage for when I need them.

What would be fair price to pay for the 405? It's just got for sale and a phone number on it - no price. It looks in good nick and it's still got the original alloys.

If I keep the engine back what other parts do I need to remember keeping before scrapping the shell?

If it ends up being more expensive than planned are there any other valuable parts off it that I could ebay to get some money back?

They really are paying you siggies too much!

205GTi Track car, I am very jealous!

Check Autotrader and all the car classifieds see if you can find some then make a bid lower than that to start with.

Hi Gaz, I bought it to save money honest! I had a 'moment' in my 964 at Donnington a couple of months ago, figured I could easily spend a fortune if it went wrong so got this little beauty:

Na, my Mundano dismal does the towing. Cadwell could definitely be on the cards for next year, keep your eyes pealed for a good value session.

I'm thinking of turning up to look at this Mi16 tomorrow with my trailer and offering £300, I could sell the alloys and seats and maybe a few other bits, and get the shell weighed in for scrap. I don't really need another engine but if it's cheap enough it makes sense to have it as a spare or a future upgrade. Thing is there's nothing wrong with my currant 8V motor and it's been set up on the carbs and piper camshaft really well.

What sort of hp is your 8v kickng out? it may be that the 16v Mi isn't worth the trouble if it's a high number.

If you do/did get it, you may aswell keep everything under the bonnet, although you don't need the radiator or the exhaust. You'll need to re-angle the exhaust manifold or buy a re-angling plate and get the intake manifold cut down or trim the fan cowling for it to fit properly. It'd be wise to get new engine mounts and give the hoses a once over incase they're knackered. You can either keep the Mi gearbox, or slap on your 1.9, or for really short ratios the 1.6, you need the Mi clutch and flywheel for all three though.

The car had sold on Saturday, bit annoying as I couldn't view it on sat cause the seller said he was at work all day then going straight out in the evening so we'd organised Sunday. Hate it when people go against their word but suppose as a seller you have to act first come first served.

My engine was rolling roaded with 137bhp @ the flywheel but it has since had a Piper 270 degree Camshaft fitted so hopefully a bit more. My current engine runs really well, I was only interested in this particular Mi16 as it was local and cheap, I would have probably stored it for about a year then fitted it over next winter. I think I would really prefer a GTi-6 lump if I did upgrade, from what I read they seem like an almost as straight forward swap as a Mi16 job.

Mi16s for track cars aren't that brilliant an idea as they suffer from oil surge. I don't think the GTi-6 engines suffer as much but I might be wrong. I believe ther is a bit of a debate on-going, the oil surge is well proven on the Mi though and even with various methods short of dry sumping tried I've not heard of a surge free Mi.

As for tuning the 8v, you can spend a fortune and not reach the power of a 16v in stock trim so I really would look at a 16v engine but just do your research first. There are quite a few people running 16v lumps on 205 GTiDrivers. I currently run a tuned 8v on the road but regret spending too much on my 8v as I'd have more go from a stock 16v and would have the option of spending cash to increase it.
