Who knows their stuff about 205s then?

After initially looking at 1.6 GTis and coming to the unhappy conclusion that i can not afford to insure or run one (or my current 306 ) I came across today a very tidy 1.8td 205, with 12 months test for 400 notes.

Am i right in thinking that the Tds have the same suspension as the GTis? With the solid bottom arms etc?

It is K reg and has no rust at all - inner wings are sound as are the tops of the b pillars. I reckon itll look alright on a set of 1900 wheels.

Any thoughts, ideas, comments, or abuse appreciated.

If you can't afford to insure a GTi have you condsidered an XS, they are supposed to be very much a 'junior' GTi and are highly regarded.

Don't know anything about oil burners though because I'm not gay.

XS is the way to go. 'Monkey' out of Autocar (who has a fleet of 911s) says he will never sell his XS he likes it so much.

i think it was the STDT which had similar GTI bits, im not sure about lesser models.

as the boys say, the XS and the rallye are both capable cars, witha bit of scope for a 1.6 16v conversion at a later date

I know a man who would know for sure but certainly some of the Turbo Diesels had GTi suspension, really not that hard to fit it though if you want to.

Easy to see the difference: GTis have proper lower wishbones while a base model has a bar (like half a wishbone) with a connection to the anti-roll bar part way down to prevent foward to back motion.

All the 205 TDs have bog standard base model suspension, except the STDT which has drop links and both front and rear anti roll bars. These really make a huge difference to the handling of the car, when compared to the base model suspension setup.

I've driven base model 205s which had no rear anti roll bars and they're quite scary! I run the STDT.net site, so give me a shout if you're after any info (apart from where to find one. Very rare - I estimate ~500 or less produced)Sadly most have been neglected and often look like the previous owners farmed pigs inside them!

Well, I bought it.

What a little rocket! It seems more accelerative than my old 1.6 306. It does have 1 piece bottom arms, and vented front brakes, a la 1.6 GTi. It handles very well, like a gokart.

Now i just need to work out how to mount an intercooler...

Have you tried HIC insurance ? let them know its a classic car to (over 15 years) mine is very cheap with nill no claims.
