Definately a shame to break a good one. Locks are common to fail on all PSA cars from the 80's and 90's. They don't rust bad, but if its a white one without rust on the A and C-pillars then it's pretty mint.
I reckon there must more 205's with XU9J4's in now than BX 16v's and 405 Mi16's. Never driven the 405, looks ok but perhaps slightly more dull than a BX 16v due to refinement and noise supression....the BX is very loud and sharp feeling. I'd never even contemplate taking the engine out for a 205 either laugh

Mines the red one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVWmmo_c0hA  (don't be fooled....shiney but a shitter! You'd be better off with yours!)

Here comes the can of worms:

I reckon on an A-B or cross country sprint (ie with bumps, undulations, crests, slow corners and fast corners) a BX 16v would be quicker overall than a 205 Mi16. Not on a track, or short sprint circuit, but for cross country blatting I can get from A-B quicker in my BX 16v than my TVR. Seriously under rated car, mainly because people don't like the way it looks, or are scared off by the simple hydraulics that even a monkey could work out.

Do I sound biased? lol

Quite possibly true, I've owned 3 (THREE!) Xantia's before and was impressed by the hydraulics on that: would corner nice and flat when hustled, and lovely and light to drive when you just wanted to waft.

Here's the crunch though, my 205 is purely a track car, so the bumpy road scenario doesn't come into it. With the Mi16 engine and my twin Dellorto's bolted on the 205 should be looking at near 230bhp/tonne. That PWR combined with the super short gearing from the 1.6 box, uprated brakes and suspension should make it a real track toy.

It will, I agree. A well sorted 205 Mi will destroy most things on a track, although I'm determined to build the AX VTS I've always wanted one day and go 205 hunting.

I admire them, but I also want to humiliate them laugh

205 mi16 on the road will give most things a run for their money tbh, ask anyone on the south wales region, ask a certain 996 GT2 owner and his missus wink with tyres and suspension sorted, its very confortable and exploitable at 9/10ths (im not sure im talented enough to find 10/10ths!)

I'm fitting mine this weekend smile the sole previous most ambitious mechanical project I have undertaken is changing a radiator (which didn't go well.. biggrin) so wish me luck people..

Never driven/been in any 205 other than mine with a slightly tired 1.6 lump, so really exited to find out just how much of a step up in performance it is. I'll report back when it's running - could be months rather than days..

One question that has arisen: will I need to keep the BX ECU even if I'm running on carbs? on the 8v engine the distributor controls the ignition advance and retard but on the 16v this is done by the ECU, will a modified 8v distributor do away with the need for the ECU? On my 8v currently on carbs I don't run an ECU and it runs fine.

Easiest way around it is to buy a dizzy adapter. The 16v lump is distrubtor-less, but you can fit an 8v distributor and cap etc on the end of the exhaust cam in place of the cap the 16v uses. You need an adapter to make it fit IIRC, but it shouldn't be hard to track this down.
You can do away with the ECU's entirely.

I've driven a 1990 16v BX. Simply staggeringly fast in any gear at any speed. It just flew.

I've decided not to bother with the project as my 8v engine is running so sweetly nowadays. The BX is now up for sale complete

Yeah hopefully by the time the weather gets better March/April. Want a new set of tyres - probably Toyo R888s, the carbs re-tunning and maybe the windows done (just need to find some sliders as theer are plenty of places to do the sheet polycarb for cheap)

Just saw a pic of your car on this thread:

Another "novice" day Paul?
