On the back of the 'Test a tyre' it got me thinking.

I had a set of Falken ZE512 on the front of my VTR until recently, and was very very happy with them. The gave massive grip, and always provoked lift off oversteer with a budget set on the rear.

Sadly they only lasted me 8,000miles (probably my driving) and have resorted to budgets as its the festive period and money is tight.
But the whole driving experience has really been lost. They slip and slide and the handling and 'fun factor' just isn't as much fun, and lift off doesn't give anywhere near the same kick anymore.

I cant want for some money to put Falkens back on ALL ROUND. But at £52 fitted they aren't cheap.

What have other put on their VTR's and been happy with? Any good mid-range out there?

I had michelin pilots on mine when i bought it, they felt great, i was impressed with the grip but they were seriously worn so i bought some others. Unfortunatly I couldn't get the same and was recommended michelin energy tyres. These werent as good and resulted in one written off vtr (ok so it probably wasnt all down to the tyres but hey.) They werent as good anyway! Just bought another vtr but at this time of year im not going to test the tyres at anyewhere near the limit, especially with my track record so i can't really comment on their performance.
Good luck getting some decent rubber anyway, its a pain when you feel short changed as its not like you can return them.

Yokohama A539s are excellent in the dry, not so good in the wet but wear fairly well for such a grippy tyre. I use these on my track car.

Toyo Proxes T1 Rs are the other popular budget choice for french hatches. Very grippy and better than the yokos in the wet but take a couple of hundred miles to 'bed in' and wear failry quickly.

Last time I looked both were about £45 on mytyres.co.uk

What have you got on at the moment? 512s and FK452s are thought of as premium budget in the grand scale of things, I wouldn't want to go much cheaper on a car you like to throw around.

Got the worst of worst right now. have £600 coming to me in jan. Thinking VTS conversion & putting Falkens back on. They were AMAZING Track days shouldn't be an issue, they just wear real quick. But quick is sticky in MOST cases.

And the cost off getting a VTS is far higher than simply a VTS lump.
