I've owned god knows how many french cars now, but am looking for a cheap yet kinda interesting runabout. I've noticed 306 HDi's in particular and wondered is there a big economy advantage over the 1.9TD models? I had a Xantia TD estate a while back which was a good car, but the economy wasn't quite there although I realise it's a heavier body than the 306.
Just got rid of a Xsara VTR as I didn't get on with it (turns out the only Xsara I like is the VTS) so not too fussed on a Xsara, but any other suggestions? Doesn't have to be French, but I know the diesel engines are well proven.

Cheers

Personally I'd like to try a 206 GT hdi thing with the 1.6 diesel of 110bhp, I've heard it's a rocket.

Not sure what the 2.0 HDi 206s are like - seems like a big heavy engine and not a lot of power so I don't have much hope for them.

But these are all probably over £2k unless you're lucky?

406 HDi?

A bit off topic but I'm arranging a test drive of a 207 sport 1.6 110 hdi thing which should be fun.

Hi There,
Why not try a Citroen C5 110 bhp Hdi ? You can pick up a bargain because no-one (except us Cit fans) seems to like them. Just make sure you don't buy the models that use EOLYS fluid, they seem to be a lot of trouble if they go wrong. Peter.

Is that the 1.6 110bhp in the c5? Have to wonder if that's a bit heavy but then could make it a great cheap car.

I noticed how cheap 407s are now - OK still £4-5k so over the budget (yeah i'm off topic again!) but very cheap for a still pretty new design.
