I am trying to sort out my daughters car which has a starting problem. When Cold it will not start at all, and no spark at the ht leads to the spark plug. Tow it and it starts virtually straight away. Checked the spark plugs when engine is warm and they are sparking. Leave it to cool down and same again, not starting. Any ideas anyone.

Is the engine cranking a lot slower when cold? could be robbing all the power from the battery and not giving enough to spark. If so test the battery, if battery is ok you may have a bad earth.

Battery is fine and engine turns over fine too, even with a boost pack it still will not start. I am thinking that some sort of sensor is stopping the start sequence from getting the power to the ignition unit, but cannot understand why it goes under tow?

I've had this problem with mine.

More than likely it is the immobiliser in the key barrel which reads the chip from the key when you start the engine to remobilise the engine. This often develops a loose connection.

Try a couple of things first, when it won't start put it in gear, switch the car right off (key back to "0" and twist all the way so the car leaps forward.(Obviously only a little bit) Apparently this sends a pulse through and sometimes it'll work the next time you try to start it properly (not sure why).

The other one is to hit hard the underside of the key barrel with the cover over and it can create the connection again.

Good luck, these two really do work, only once has the car packed up good 'un proper!
