Thanks for helping me realise that my expectations of newer cars are waaaaaaay too high! I had a pair of 205's years ago- a 1.1 petrol and the other a diesel, both brilliant reliable cars-I didn't have any problems with them so I thought after a gap of a few years i would get a 206GTi.It seems that cars are only built to last a certain amount of time now to encourage buying newer ones. I think my central locking is playing up....again-time for a change methinks. It's nice to see some 205's still about, especially the GTi's.

I had a 206XS on a W plate and it was in the garage 3 times with central locking problems in the 3 years I owned it. Now I have a 03 plate Clio 172 and one of the main reasons I am keeping it is because I have spent loads on it so there cant be much left to go wrong!! The other reason is its such good fun, and there is no way I could get anything as much fun with what it has for the price

Mrs JS has a 04 plate 206 GTI.

The only similarity with our old 205 GTI is it's just as badly made....

Absolutely not IMO.

The driving experience between the 205 and 206 is so diffferent it's hard to believe they come from the same manufacturer.

We both loved our old 205 GTI. It was like driving a go cart. With some subtle mods, it was a fantastic car. Me and Mrs JS would fight each other for the keys whenever we went out together. Even the kids loved it.

The 206 GTI we have now - although it is actually quite quick and sticks to the road like st to a blanket - is dull, unresponsive and has no feel whatsoever through the controls. In addition to this it's badly made with laughable panel gaps and has a truely hideious plasticky interior that's already rattling and disintigrating.

The Mother in Law has a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta that's more fun to drive

I am quite disappointed with the 206GTi,mind you I was abit spoilt before with a Jaguar XJS 3.6, again the build quality wasn't up to much but the pleasure of driving it more than made up for all it's short comings. I am dithering about whether to get a Mazda MX5,to have abit of driving fun-can't afford a VXR8, which is probably just as well as I would probably crap myself!!!!

Looks like the 306 GTi6 was the last of the 'great' Pug hot hatches. On the plus side you can pick up a late 2000/early 2001 car for less than 3 grand.
I had one and takeaway the pug reliability issues and its a very good car even by todays standards.

You could indeed be right. I wish we had done more test driving, reading and PH'ing before we bought the Pug.

Unfortunately the 206 was Mrs JS's birthday prezzie. She drove it briefley, fell in love with the GTI thing again and gave me no peace for over two weeks 'till I caved in and agreed to buy it for her.

She still loves it - dispite me and both both the JS Babies evil taking the piss out of it at every opportunity - which, as it's her car is the important thing 'tho.

I got myself a 205 as a town/shopping/station car to complement the Monaro.

I couldn't ask for more in a little hot hatch. It is brilliant and really taught me what fun can be had along deserted b-roads. It is 10 times as good as I hoped it would be. I want to change the bushes and put some decent rubber on it next to get the handeling top notch. I am also surprised at the prices for performance parts when compared to Monaros. It seems like a 0 has been missed off!

Managed to get the thing drifting very nicely yesterday exiting a roundabout.... brilliant fun! (btw, I don't mean arse out Monaro style, more the four wheel drift you get with a well balanced car).

You cant beat a bit of lift off oversteer in a 205 or 306 GTi. Fantastic fun. Just a shame they dont make 'em like that anymore. frown

Lets not forget the 106 GTI/ Rallye here guys. Cracking cars with all the classic peugeot ingredients. But it's true things have gone downhill since then.

Why they don't bring out a 107 GTI is beyond me. They are very light, lighter than a 205 or 106. Stick in a 16v 1.6 with 130hp, some 15" alloys and sort the suspension and they'd have another future classic on their hands.

Yes indeedy.. I suppose if you wanted to be a Mr Health and Saftey concsious - litigation aware -
toe the company line Eurobox designer you could argue the 205 GTI was a bit of a handfull on the limit, and the 206 is safer and more predictable, but driving it is so fking sleep boring.

As long as it is light. Modern cars are weighed down by all the safety and gizmo rubbish older classics don't have. Hence why 130bhp in a 205 feels and goes quite well by today's standards.

On the flip side, each time I look at the size of the a & b pillars, I hope I don't crash!

Yes I agree that cars nowadays have to be safer and that means more weight etc, but there's no fun and they all look the same except the xylon or zylon fronted civic which I now actually quite like. Bring back the 6R4 although how the hell that was ever related to the Metro I don't know!! Oh well I will just have to imagine I'm driving something else-like a Cobra,Mustang,Proper Mini Cooper S........
