I have never subscribed to the Marque loyalty syndrome and it is usually models rather than makers that press my buttons. Most of the modern Bentleys are beautiful cars but apart from the new Mulsanne don't excite me. As for the RR Phantom, it only needs a gun on the top and it could take part in "The Battle of the Bulge"
It is however not a competition and the beauty of it is that we can all indulge in what turns us on. There are people who dote on Morris Marinas. Good luck to them. We are all part of this great community of Petrolheads and long may it flourish.

Paul,

Also excellent points. I share the same sentiments exactly. I love my TR6 but wouldn't have a Spitfire for the world. Same with my Land Rover. Rangie any day. Forget the Discovery/Freeloader...

As for my proper motor cars- My Cloud, a series II, I prefer as it has the early, single-headlamp front and but with the V8 engine (which is lighter than the six). My Shadow is a Series II as well hence rack and pinion steering and fab split-level climate control. The Turbo R, well, it's a 30,000 series car which, after having a 20,000 and a 50,000, I find I prefer the 30,000 as it has the best of both the early and late cars all wrapped into one neat package.

Phantom? Yeah, agree it is rather vulgar but the looks are [oddly] growing on me. Maybe when I find one with 100K on it, I'll feel compelled to splash out the funds to experience one for a while but would most certainly move it on.

Definitely.

Lots of people would not be able to tell the difference between a C-Class and an S-Class. Both are Merecedes this both = FLASH / EXPENSIVE in their eyes. Demonstrated by a post I saw on facebook earlier where someone had posted a funny number plate they spotted. It was an old previous shape C200 and the first response was 'nice plate on a flash car' ... or something along those lines.

So when it comes to Bentley / Rolls Royce there is no doubt people will link it to millionaire status.

Although as someone posted in this thread, Bentley's (Continental GT's in particular) are incredibly common. I saw 5 today while out and about. They have become up market cars as a oppose 'woah - stop in your tracks and have look' rare car. Saying that, I've also spotted five different Rolls Royce Phantoms (one of which was a drophead) in the last week ... and it's not like I live in London, either.

People becoming more interested cars... or people becoming more prosperous...

It makes you wonder. Wasn't 2011 Rolls Royces best year for sales? I suppose many of those bought went to China. I read in In Gear towards the end of last year that there are just over 200 new Ghosts registered in the UK.

I used to have a 10 year old C Class Merc, bought for 3 grand and did get the usual comments on it being flash, expensive looking etc.
