'So, if you have split rims, be sure they've never been separated by a less than perfect repairer'

A well known problem sadly and one that you would be well advised to sort in the UK. There are only a small number of wheel restorers who are experienced enough to take on the split rim wheels. Many try but end up ruining the threads of the bolts even to the point where it's normal to find cars with the bolts simply super glued back on.

Good luck and I hope you get your car back to the UK ASAP.

Just a note to say thanks for all the help and advice.

I am pleased to say that we had a great trip to Lake Garda and back with no problems or breakdowns. The tolling tag took upnto ten seconds to work at some tolls but it didn't fail to let us through. As it took so long we didn't risk using it through the glass and resorted to holding it out of the window on approach to each barrier. This gave rise to some buttock clenching moments going through the 30km/hr gates but the barriers rose at the last second.

Pre-ordering the Swiss vignette saved an enormous amount of time as the guards must have assumed we'd already visited Switzerland this year and simply waved us through without stopping.

As for the channel tunnel. Simply great! The advice to book the high car coach proved invaluable as the road track is much wider and allowed the Bentley more than enough room to drive on and off.

Best Regards,

BB.

Glad you had a great trip. Its what these cars were made for. The tags and vignettes are just the icing on the cake. The cars attract all sorts of favourable attention and you meet some great people. We got into conversation with a guy at a restaurant on the banks of Lake Lucerne who had a Rolls a Bentley and several Harley Davidson. He looked like an escapee from an American road movie with more tattoos than David Beckham but turned out to be the towns leading Dentist!
We take our Arnage on the Continent every year and enjoy every minute. I don't drive as fast as I used to over there but a 450 mile drive over there is a pure pleasure.
Do it again next year!
