Possible new owner advice RR Bentley

Good evening,

I currently own an Aston DB9 manual and a 911 Turbo Manual so my sporting fix is catered for. I fancy a luxuary saloon to enjoy on more relaxing days and roads. The car will only be for Sunday drives and therefore I was only wanting to spend up to £25k.

My question is what car for that money? Should I go for a RR Silver Spirit/Spur or a Bentley Arnage? I believe Seraphs are getting too expensive.

I fancy a Rolls Royce and like the more traditional interior of the Silver Spirit/Spur models. My concern is that they are getting old, the drive might be disappointing, they are not as brisk at overtaking as you may require and some people might thing it is dated.

The Arnage will be a better car, faster, better handling, more modern and looks very handsome. However I don't like the cramped rear, BMW switchgear, jaguar like doorcards and it's not a RR.

Any thoughts because my mind is scrambled! Do you think the SilverSpurs have hit bottom and will go up in value?

Try a Bentley Continental GT
£25 K wil buy a nice launch modal , plenty of wood n leather + performance to 196 mph and 4. Something ? 0to 60

A nice intro / let down from the 911 T into a " Crew " product .

Aston will be redundant .Get you £ back .

I know what you mean about the BMW switchgear. (The Seraph has it too, though.)

I'd go for the Silver Spur or stretch for the face-lifted (2005) Arnage (with much nicer VW switchgear).

I want a saloon so the family can come too so that rules out the Continental GT. I looked at the Flying Spur but they don't float my boat. I know they are amazing cars and a lot of car for the money.

There are two Flying Spurs for sale that I like. I like that they are Traditional Rolls Royce's. I am worried they are Traditional Rolls Royce's.

There are plenty of Arnage's for sale but I fancy a Rolls Royce because deep down I want a Phantom.

Try a Silver Spur then. I don't know if they've hit bottom or not yet, but they aren't going either up or down at any great rate so you wouldn't lose much if you decided it wasn't for you.

1996 model year (ie. last of the line) Silver Spirit or Spur. Check out the original RR promo video on the 96 model year I just posted! Might help with your decision.

£20K should buy nothing short of an excellent example, low mileage with extensive history based on time not mileage a this price. Or walk away (or ask for considerable discount). Ride should be excellent, or suspension work will be required. In a nutshell.

Personally, I really like them and I think - one day - the 80's look will become very fashionable.

Dont worry. There really are plenty around.

Key to remember, it's a buyer's market and they take a long time to shift - It's compulsory to make a very low starting offer. Leave it. Go back, up it slightly. Go away. Come back. You should be able to strike a very good deal on a very nice car.

I also have relatively modern performance cars such as a Ferrari 360 and a Maserati GranSport MC Victory and I love my Silver Spur for those occasions when luxury wafting is the order of the day.

Anything from the Spirit/Spur II should be a good option as you have fuel injection, ABS, active ride etc.,..

I personally think the shape has aged well. I grew up with Shadows as my dad ran a succession of four of them as dailies back in the day and I didn't like the Spirit shape when new. Now I think it has grown in to itself and looks vey elegant.

Prices for the best Spirits and Spurs have already increased and I doubt you would lose money on a good car if it continues to be well kept. I would personally look for a Spur and hold out for one with an interesting specification.

I was originally looking for a really good Shadow II but when I stumbled across my Silver Spur II Mulliner Park Ward Edition the huge spec swung it for me and whilst I will never use things like the built in humidor they are a great talking point and add to the fun of owning the car. The more individual whilst being tasteful the better and a car that is unusual in a good way will always be worth more and be easier to sell in the future.

If you approach the drive in the right mindset and enjoy wafting along with the Spirit of Ecstasy guiding your way I very much doubt you will regret the purchase.

I had a drive today for the first time of an Arnage and Silver Spur. Both beautiful! My own personal concerns with the Arnage came to fruition. It was a nice drive but did not make me feel special.

The Silver Spirit did feel older but felt so much special. The Silver Spur and Spirt looked so much more classier and special. I'm going to pull the trigger on a RR.

What one??? A More expensive Spur or cheaper Spirit?

P.S. Are the digital clock and temperature gauge easy to change for analogue garages?

Re digital clock etc. I doubt it's easy to change as the earlier, and later, analogue dials were round so the dash veneer would need to be changed as well. IIRC, they reverted to the round analogue dials in approx 1986/7.
I wouldn't be too concerned about a Spirit or Spur, unless you need the extra rear legroom, I'd be inclined to opt for the best of either model that I could find.

I would aim for Spur II / Spirit II 1990 onwards, if you can run to it. Or, at least 1989 onwards when there were a lot of upgrades too (I think it was 89? or possibly 87). But, personally, I would aim for 90 onwards.

As Matt has said and I said earlier aim for 1990 onwards Spirit and Spur II due to the updates. Also you then will not have to worry about the digital displays as they were replaced with an analogue clock at this time and two more chrome eye ball vets were also added.

The 1990 model year Spirit 11, which was introduced in late 1989 has a digital clock, not analogue.

Midnight Blue, 22k mikes and totally original stunning condition. The car was local to me at Derek C Mowat. He was a pleasure to deal with and his cars are stunning! A very nice chap. I'm over the moon.
