Hi,

I have a Rolls Royce 20 which we have just got running after many years in storage. My dad had owned the car since the 70s but he died when i was young.

I am posting to see if there are any other 20 or 20/25 owners out there who can give me some tips on driving it. Both start up and settings when it is fully going and at top speed.

There are a number of settings and its a bit confusing: Its just like the one in the pic below.
Running/Ignigition switch, thats pretty obvious
Weak/Strong slider on the dash...dont have a clue about this one.

Throttle open/closed. Is this a case of open and lower speed and start and closed when you are cruising?
Ignigtion early/late. Is this the retard. What do i do with this, didnt seem to make any difference when driving.

Also the vertical slider on the dash which i think also says strong and weak i cant remember. (you can see this on the pic through the steering wheel)

And also near the autovac there are two knobs, one of which we believe cuts off the fuel when it is depressed. Do i need to switch this on/off when i leave the car overnight? What is the other larger knob for?

Also maintenance tips would be appreciated.

Hope someone can shed some light on this for me...

Thanks

David

Yes, early/late is the advance/retard. Generally speaking you want more advance at higher revs, and less at lower revs (and particularly starting).

At a guess the weak/strong (or perhaps weak/rich?) is the choke. The "throttle" might be an alternative accelerator pedal?

Cheers,
Jeff.

The throttle on the steering wheel is a hand throttle that overrides the accelerator pedal. Before starting the car - particularly when cold - open the hand throttle slightly - trial and error will determine how much - this will keep the idle slightly faster to prevent stalling .Once the engine warms up the hand throttle can be gradually closed, so that normal idle is maintained. The accelerator pedal is used for normal driving in the usual way.

Thanks fellas. That make sense about the throttle control. Any idea which way round the early late is?
