I am considering buying a Turbo R or a Bentley Eight a, mid 90’s model but have really only just started to look. What I am trying to get a idea of is just how much are they too run. People say they are very expensive, I am used to Porsche prices and I know on a day to day basis my fuel bill will go up, but are servicing costs that much more?

Also when looking at prospective cars, is there anything special I should be looking for.

Any help and idea will be appreciated.

According to my spreadsheet, the total expenditure on my 1990 Turbo R since I purchased it in September 2001 amounts to £46,780. That is for the correct scheduled servicing, maintenance, repairs, upgrades etc, and a repaint. But not including fuel, insurance and Vehicle Excise Duty. So that's £6,680 a year, or £3,825 a year if I don't include the repaint that cost £20K.

£3000 to £4000 a year would be about right if you are going to look after the car properly at a good independent. About half that if you are going to do the bare minimum.

Thats actually surprisingly cheap. I'm looking to purchase a Turbo R in around 2-3 years time (house must come first unfortunately) as a Sunday car, and knowing that servicing isn't too steep is quite a bonus biggrin

Lol Fair enough, I have always fancied a Bentley and now seems to be as good time as any. I do need
to move the 968 on, I will keep my S2 for competition and track days. Go on make me an offer on the 968, you know you want too.....

BG, thanks for yor help, the figures you have quoted have not sent me running scared. Just
as an approximation, what sort of MPG can I expect, do I need to buy a small tanker to follow
me around?

Thanks

14mpg if you're good, 7mpg if you're not.

You've spent how much on that bloody car again???

My current woman makes similar noises whenever a new box of bits turns up either for the GTO or the Discovery - however when I met her I forewarned her that the cars are a non-negotiable section of my life - she agreed to it, and now she has to live with it biggrin

To give you an idea on fuel last time i filled my RT400 it cost me £95. I went on a long run and I got 310 miles from the tank. If I had used it just around town it would have done 220 miles to the tank only

Thank you for your help, Mr BG roughly how many miles a year do you do, if you do 2K a year then
your costs will put me off, If your doing 10k/year then I can live with them.

That's about what I get too.

5333 a year on average. But the costs will be pretty much the same whether you do the miles or not, in fact, cars that get used more often might be less problematical, and cost less to run, excluding the extra fuel used of course.

These cars like to be used frequently.

I have had mine (1990) for just coming up to six years, during which time I have spent £21,500 (a little over what I paid for the car) including all maintenance, repairs, insurance, tax etc., but not fuel. Like BG I have done the odd uprgrade (but not as extensive as his) and some paintwork (but not a full respray) and have always had whatever needed doing done - I like to keep the car in tip-top condition and, frankly, that is the only way to run a Bentley: if you skimp on maintenance, it will eventually cost you a lot more.

I have averaged 14.3 m.p.g. over that time and the best I have ever recorded on a run was 18.0 m.p.g.

I hope that helps convince you that you should buy one - they are fantastic value for money and wonderful cars to own. Very different from a Porker (I have a 911), but equally wonderful cars in their different ways.

Don't buy a cheapie - go for the best car you can find, with a full history (ideally main agents early on and a good independent in recent years) and low miles, in good condition inside and out and a sensible colour scheme, just in case you ever want to sell - which, of course, you won't!

Happy hunting!

BB, thank you for that, I think I maybe in for a long wait before a Bentley sits on my drive. The 968 has to go first and given the current market conditions I think that may be a while. I have not been put off Bentleys by any of the reports I have read and the kind information provided on here so once the 68 has left the search will begin.

Keep the 968 - a Porsche and a Bentley make an ideal pair: complete opposites, they complement each other nicely, because one is the antidote to the other.

BB I have a 944S2 that I am keeping, so I can't justify the 968 as well...
