Bentley MKV Corniche recreation.

The old chaps and volunteers at the RR Heritage site at Derby. The original car got lost at the start of the war, the car was in Paris with the service department post crash. The chassis made it back to the UK, but the body was lost at Dieppe with the evacuation. They have acquired a MKV chassis, and some engines, as well as many 'new' Corniche parts that were discovered. Only nineteen MKV's were built, eleven were bodied, and four chassis were destined to become Corniches, only the one got built, but unfortunately it was destroyed. This is a recreation, a new body is being hand rolled and should be on by September.

Hmmm, that's not the impression that Ken Lea gave. Parts may not be 'common' in terms of interchangeability, but in general design terms, we were told that the two cars have very much in common. I am not too familiar with the Derby chassis, but having rebuilt and owned a MKVI for several years, this looked pretty similar. The bulk of the conversation on the day consisted mainly of what was and what wasn't, and there were some pretty wise old sages there when it came to things RR/Bentley.

The engine is different, the gearboxes are very similar, the MKVI being derived from the MKV.roadmap said:

The MK V was manufactured in Derby and is a very different car from the MK V1 which was made in Crewe.
I'm not so sure about that, even if it was six of one, and half a dozen of the other. I would reckon that the MKV was more MKVI than Derby, as the MKVI was a direct development of the MKV so they are bound to be very similar. And the MKV had many features that you wouldn't see on a Derby but you would see on a MKVI. The Packard front suspension for example.I suppose the MKV is the missing link between Derby and Crewe. But you could say that the MKVI isn't really a Crewe car at all, as it was developed at Clan Foundry, at Belper near Derby, which was the home of the R&D department during the war (and is also just a couple of miles walk from my house too, but what's left of Clan Foundry is now a packaging factory).
