Well, four wheel drive does not help you when braking and very little when cornering, unless you use appropriate rubber. I don't get why people save money on Winter tyres (which are superior in cold conditions as well as in the snow because they have been designed for it) after having spent well beyond 100k on a car.

Also it really annoys me if people on Summer tyres a(lso in 4WD cars) block the streets that are easy to drive at a decent pace in my RWD 997S on Winter tyres. Last but not least, if in Switzerland you are caught in an accident in the Winter months you are by law at least partially guilty getting problems with your insurance.

Regarding summer tyres, I live in the midlands and I can say in 15 years of driving I have very rarely been in need of winter tyres as once you have done say 5 miles of driving the tyres are normally warm enough to grip the road sufficiently.

This has been the case in all my cars over the years (bmw's hondas porsches ferraris and now bentleys) and I'm sure this is the case for most the people in England and Wales and more than likely harry in sunny brighton.

I'm sure that in Scotland, especially the highlands I would be thinking seriously about winter tyres and having driven through Switzerland I am not suprised it is a legal responsibility to have winter tyres in winter as a lot of their roads are in the vicinity of mountainous terrain but in the most of England (especially since winters are no where near as severe as they used to be) winter tyres are not something we really need.
