Hi All,

My 2002 MCS is undriveable at the moment, a BMW/MINI independent garage has diagnosed the problem. The pipe between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder (clutch) has rubbed against the gearbox and worn through. The part itself is about £25, they say, but it is a 3 hour job apparently, and with everything all in it will be £190. To replace the pipe, which I don't believe is inside the gearbox or anything?

It's just annoying as if the pipe had gone while I was at home then I could get it sorted by friends for just the price of the pipe. However I'm at university 300 miles away so don't have an option, but I wondered if anyone knew this kind of problem, or if any mechanics could let me know if 3 hours labour sounds about right?

Thanks,
Lucie

I would phone up a BMW dealer and get them to give you a price (parts and labour inc time).

Looking at the haynes manual tonight. Remove undertray and replace hose, I would guess an hour , maybe 1 1/2 for stubborn bolts and bleeding.

Even if it is a 3 hour job then you are paying a lot for labour. My indie charges £30 p/h.

Would take about 1 hour to sort it.

I have done a few and its quite easy

  • remove the air box and remove the ecu
  • remove the metal tray under the air box
  • remove the pipe from the slave and metal connector
  • install new pipe and bleed the clutch
simple
