Looking for an Auto/Convertible Mini for my wife but have read various horror stories about the CVT transmission going pop on the Mini.

What I can't seem to find is any info on when BMW stopped using the CVT system. I 'think' the Hatch got a new transmission when they moved to the current model, which I think was 2006 wasn't it? This being the case did they switch the convertible models at the same time or did this have to wait until 2009 when the conv. went to the newer shape etc?

I didn't really want to buy a car as new as 2009 but then again I don't really want to shell out for an older model only to find the CVT tranny dies on us resulting in what I believe are very high replacement costs.

Any advice/information would be much appreciated from you guys in the know...

Good question... can't find the answer myself. All I can suggest is that if you see a good R52 then make a note of the chassis number and pop into a dealer to ask if they can look it up. They might be helpful whistle

I don't know but...

CVT transmissions are very distinct, the car drives like it only has one gear and it's like the revs don't match road speed most the time (a bit like a centrifugal clutch on go kart) a standard auto will have gears as such and therefore if you test drive should be quite noticeable. Avoid CVT at all cost because whether it explodes or not it’s awful.

56 plate cars are new shape, 06 is previous shape. The easiest way to tell is the new shape has indicators built into the headlights.

All 1st Generation One/Cooper automatics whether hard top or soft top will have the CVT box. The 1st Gen Cooper S has a more resiliant Auto Box.

The Hardtop was replaced in Autumn 2006, the Convertible in 2008. Any Ones/Coopers made before this will have the CVT Box.
