Mini Cooper S

I was wondering if anybody could help. I have a 2005 Cooper S and when I go to change gear from 1st to 2nd it very occasionally locks. Meaning it is very hard to move out of 1st and into 2nd. It used to only happen when the car is cold but is now happening, again only occasionally when the car has been running for a while. Any ideas? Many thanks
