As far as I can work out the cheepest option is to get the OBD to PC link and than the correct software for your car.

Thanks have ordered a scanner up, latest mini's as far as understand use Can Bus Protocol so need a compatatable scanner. Looked at ELM 327 type plug in plus laptop software but received mixed feed back from vendors one saying yes it should work and one saying it would not work.

Will post back after trying ordered scanner (Its has a 7 day return Policy)

Bought MaxiScan MS300 of E-bay for £25.
Read obd fault-camshaft sensor, this is the third camshaft sensor now replaced. New Bosch senser from Euro car parts - £30. 5 minutes to fit (lucky as there are 2 sensors and picked right one first time) and Maxiscan reset engine light.
Some of the features on the Maxi-scan will not work with my R56 mini such as retreiving vin, but seems ok as a very basic obd reader.

See how long this camshaft sensor lasts.

Try this:

Haven't used it on a MINI but worked a treat on a 2006 Audi A3. Very simple to use and works well.
