I forgot that we needed one of these when negotiating for our Mini and whilst I will try to tap up the salesman for one I fear I may have to buy one and as I recall they are not cheap.

Has anyone found an alternative to buying from Mini themselves?

Can I ask, is it a new mini you are buying? If so the dealer will supply you one.

Pre-registered. Is it standard practice for one to be included in the sale?

If your car has Media Pack then you are entitled to one for free (this is on a new car, so it would be unfair for the dealer to pocket it on a pre-reg). If your car doesn't have Media Pack, sadly, you need to fork out £30-40 if you want the Y cable!!

I have Visual BOOST Radio and I got it for free. The salesman almost "forgot" about it. Last I checked, it was £44.95 from the parts department.

Don't worry, the standard white iPod/iPhone white cable from Apple will do just fine.

This statement is only valid if you just want to play your music. But if you want to use all the features of MINI Connected, then you need to have the y-cable

The connector is most likely to be hidden in the little pocket/storage under the radio in front of the gear shift. Mine has a 3.5 jack. Yes, the cables from the dealer are not the cheapest.
