Oil filter leak

I've got a 51 plate MINI Cooper with a bad oil leak on the filter seal. I've bought a new filter and o ring hoping that'll solve it, is there anything I'm doing wrong or is it just a duff seal? (the current one doesn't seem damaged)

You do have to put a tuch of oil on the o ring when putting it on. If not then the o ring can catch as you do it up.

I have got the o ring in the right place haven't I?

These seals are very prone to getting caught, I recommend a good smear of grease.

I'm wondering if I'm trying to fit it in the wrong groove, it is the one above the one with a little hole in it, i.e. at the top of the threaded section?
