I drove the mrs 03 reg cooper s tonight.( It's covered 30k)
I noticed when turning the wheel every now and then there's what feels like little knots vibrating up from the steering rack.
Ive checked the ps fluid levels and it looks fine.
So could this be the ps pump playing up? I read somewhere there was issues with these.

Has anyone had similar problems?

Does it make a cracking noise?

There is a bearing at the top of the column that dries up. Pull down the lower dash around the column (its hinged and comes down with a firm pull from the top)and then slide off the plastic behind the steering wheel.

Stick your head in and you will see a big bearing, give it the good news with some lithium grease and that should cure it - had to do this with mine last week

I wouldn't say it was a crack but the area its coming from could be nearer the wheel like you said

I'll give your idea a try thanks for your reply

The problem with the bearing is that as you ajust the wheel hight it twists on the bearing. With the cover off ajust the wheel hight then to see what is going on them center the bering housing, then lubricate. Did this on my wifes mini one over 12 months ago. No problem to date.
