hi,
I am thinking of getting my 2003 (170bhp model) cooper S remapped... has any1 has it done? does it make much difference? i have a few other mods... pipercross cold air feed, miltec manifold and 200cell sports cat, full jcw exhaust to go with that, upgraded plugs and leads aswel...
if any1 has has it done please could you tell me what you think to it?

Mine was re-mapped by Hartge, along with a few other mods (15% pulley/Milltek exhaust & mani/GRS intercooler/Dave F hybrid airbox) it made 220.8 bhp on the dyno. Map was done by the previous owner so I can't really compare with standard, but it drives very well indeed, surprising quite a few more 'sportier' cars .
On some of the forums advice is you only really need a map when you add an uprated cam & bigger injectors, speak to Thomas or Paul at www.1320MINI.com they're the tuning experts & have a rolling road too;).

I've heard some bad stories about the 'Bluefin' on the Cooper s though.
Mines been mapped for over 6 years, never had any trouble at all, been on a dyno around 6 times & all runs show fuelling etc. to be in good shape

Tbh I've not heard horror stories of the engines going pop, sure some have but it doesn't seem a common occurrence.R53 JCW is the same bottom end as a regular cooper S. The only change is the head, charger and ecu changes. Cant see how they are going to be stronger. The only 'stronger' JCW I am aware of is the latest engines with turbos, which have upgraded pistons and head design over the cooper S , unless anyone knows otherwise?

Bullst. You must be talking about the R56 a completely different car. R53 engines are the.same between JCW and S, bar a very slightly different head, larger injectors and the supercharger pulley size.The JcW enigine is made stronger.
Don't bother getting your R53 mapped until you've gone to a smaller supercharger pulley and upgraded the exhaust manifold, cam and injectors. I've not heard of many engines going pop for any reason even amongst heavily modified cars.

Can you just change the pully size alone on these cars with out any other changes? Ie no re-map. Not looking to get massive figures just a cheap upgrade for a few more horses that i will notice. if i could see close to 190-200bhp i would be happy with that.

The r53 engine has been described as un-bustable its a rock steady engine ready for what you can throw at it, I am sure in the US they push a stock block to 600bhp before it died, so I wouldn't worry about a few bhp here and there. Also I would not bother mapping it till you have done the pulley, cam, injectors, air filter, manifold. basically map after you have a cam done but do the pulley before
engine wise the S r53 is the same as the JCW but the JCW head is slightly larger the other differences are external from the engine. The S r56 is not the same internals as the jcw variant. However it has been said the the r56 engine is not that good for tuning as it has a habit of having issues.
The most tunable and solid engine in the minis is the r53 S/jcw block the W11 engine.

Thanks for the Info So you recon i could just get a 17% pully on my standard cooper s 53 plate and it could run that fine with no other mod's as i said not going for big BHP figures just a little more would be nice. And what kind of gain would 17% see.

Yes, fit a 17% on its own will be fine, ideally you will want to upgrade the plugs too.
As for the mini community they all say different things and a lot of it is about getting power on the dyno, some about the power on a track and then on trhe 1/4 mile. If you want good numbers on a dyno a bigger intercooler is needed as the thing will heat soak. As for the road, well in the UK we are blessed with mostly cold days which is what we need, a 17% will give you the best value for money performance. As for the intercooler, you will get higher temps but also while your moving the stock intercooler is fine.
Mini JCM used to fit on the 225 kit a 15% pulley with the stock intercooler and I know we are talking 17% but the stock cooler is still fine, on hot days you will notice the car may temp clip in traffic but as soon as you on the open road the temp will drop again. I would advise that you consider moving to a bigger intercooler towards the summer but for now you will be fine. An intercooler you want would be either a GP or a GRS as they seam to be the best out there.

Interested to know what will happen to fuel consumption if the only mod made is fitting a 15% or 17% pulley?
Also, I'm going to need a new exhaust soon as the outer skin on one of my rear boxes has rusted off - any thoughts perhaps in conjunction with the fitting of a 15% pulley?
I live in a quiet cul de sac and leave home at 5.15am each day so not keen on anything too loud as don't want to wake the (nice) neighbours !!

Snap Mine has just started blowing in the corner of one of the boxes a few days ago. I am going to have a custom stainless one made that is as quite as standard. Interested to know what will happen to fuel consumption if the only mod made is fitting a 15% or 17% pulley?
