Evening all,

My 03 plate JCW has developed a knock on full lock to the right - at the moment it only does it once - it's not a constant knock which leads me to believe it's not a CV.

I fully intend to get it checked out in the next couple of weeks, but just wondering if anybody has had this issue before and if so, what it was?

Many thanks,
Rich

Thanks, I have emailed Trevor now as I've tried ringing several times today but it's always engaged!!

The steering column was replaced last year and as far as I am aware is meant to creak rather than knock (that's what it did before it was replaced anyway) so I'm hoping it's not that again!

My post on MiniTorque has been suggested either ball joints or top mount, so hopefully I can get it across to Minicraft soon to be checked out. I'll report back as to what it was!

I had this on my clubman s. I took it to BMW as its under warranty and they said it was the gearbox mount.

It could be a CV, the noise is not always consistent and they are prone to them because of the heat from the tight engine bay, particularly when driven enthusiastically!

Other options would be the inner tripod joint on the wishbone, this can often cause a knocking noise - they are a relatively straight forward change, you'll need a ball joint splitter, but access is tight around the drive shafts. As said it could be a steering column, but you'd tend to feel that in my experience - presumably your car is on the later steering pump (ie. the one that doesn't whine?!)

Thanks for the input everybody, much appreciated.

The car is now booked in with Minicraft for Monday. Trevor has yet to see the car, but said from my description it is almost definitely a ball joint (apparently a common issue on these) I shall update for future reference for others on here once I have the car back from MC.

Cheers!

It is indeed common, and thankfully much easier to fix than a shaft (we actually replace the full shaft rather than rebuilding the CV's as its generally more cost effective).

So the car is back from Minicraft, and the knocking is sorted.

A cheap fix, and kind of worrying at the same time...

It was found a bolt holding the lower strut brace (ie. the bolt that also goes through the subframe) had worked loose and was barely in - the strut brace moving around created the knocking. How this came loose I really don't know as they were torqued up pretty damn tight when the brace was fitted!

Glad to hear Trevor got you sorted Rich wink.

Strange how that bolt came undoneconfused, mind you, the state of the roads these days it's surprising our cars don't rattle themselves to pieces rolleyes.

Yep cheers for the recommendation. Can highly recommend Minicraft!

Thought it rude not to have a little fettling carried out whilst I was there (along with a few other remedial fixes) so I now have 17% pulley fitted too! biggrin

Was too wet to really play earlier, but the traction control certainly kicks in quicker now!

One of the other niggles I had addressed there at the same time was a faulty bypass valve, so the 2 combined does mean it pulls like a train now - a fair bit more mid range grunt is apparent too!

The bypass valve seems quite a common thing - how do you know if its faulty?

Apparently it happens on ALL Cooper S's at some point in their lives

Mine was noticeable at higher revs when driven harder - the car just didn't seem to pull consistently / smoothly - like it was loosing boost.

Minicraft took it out with a diagnostics tool plugged in and they could see the boost readings fluctuating when driven hard.
