Go less low profile, will it help?

I went to get some part worn tyres today but it turns out they were damage repaired so call me old fashioned but I walked away.
It's not all bad though as we had a great day driving the 150 mile round trip and the roof was open and weather was great
Trouble now is I'm over to buying new tyres and I'm not sure spending £600 on a set of top brands is something I can afford right now.
Is there a common consensus on the best well priced tyre for the mini cooper s?
Falken 452's normally get a good right up but either they are being phased out or just don't come in 205/45/17 size so it will have to be the the 912"s.
I see accelera are very cheap but I found them quite skittish on an old 323 I had that came with them on and I'm tempted by Avon zz3's.
Nothing is simple LOL

I have no mini experience, but going from 205/45 to 215/45s had no real disadvantages. Car had more lateral grip and was more comfortable. Maybe he needs to do that but keep to stiffer side walled tyres to keep decent turn in. The stiffer walled 215s would surely be a good compromise?
After hrs of reading up/pondering I think I'm going to go for these on that subjecthttp://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b758s103p14918/VREDES...
Onedesi you should look into these also

I'd like to buy those but they don't come in a 205 45 17 and after a bit more reading I don't want to make th steering any heavier as the car is predominantly my wife's and she does find it heavy although wont admit it LOLhttp://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b758s103p14918/VREDES...

I can't for the life of me understand why a 205 45 17 is so hard to buy - is it only used on mini's?

It should actually help the steering effort going by this I read,I can't for the life of me understand why a 205 45 17 is so hard to buy - is it only used on mini's?
"Next I ditched the horrible runflat tyres and heavy standard wheels and replaced them with a much lighter set of Team Dynamics 1.2s with Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta tyres. Wow!, what a difference, the crashiness and tramlining has gone although and it also feel like I've got super light power steering (not totally convinced that I like that though)"

I'm actually worried the steering may be too light as I like the feel with the runflats just not the crashing over bumps/into holes etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the problem is the original wheels, if you have ever taken them off, you will see they seem to weigh as much as a small moon!
I'd like to test mine on some light wheels withot run flats, I'm betting the improvement would be massive, but I think I'll just sell the car instead!

Sorry to mither but how did you get on?I've had a pleasant spanner thrown in the works today
I drove an r56 cooper s on 16 non run flats and comfort wise it was a revelation - a much more grown up car with the ability to put oodles of smiles on yer face
This has got me thinking that perhaps 16" non run flats on the r53 is the way to go - actually I'm pretty sure it is as I'm less worried about the looks.
Alternatively we could look at getting an r56 but the whine of the supercharger was a big plus point for me when I drove ours back to back.
Decisions, decisions ... LOL

I picked it up today & they look really great on it with the funky tread pattern. Slighty wider stance with nice rim protection (oooer) & not too low profile at all being 40 series. The steering is indeed lighter but not too light (I'd say now normal if it was heavy before with the runflats but not light as some cars are) The ride quality is much improved as my street is pretty bad. I don't know about grip as it will be a week or 2 for them to wear in but I noticed the wear rating is 280 so they should be pretty sticky.
The only issue is the Garage has chipped all 4 wheels so into battle I go to sort that out next week.

Your not thread jacking at all - I for one really appreciate your comments as it will help finalise a decision soonish.
I'm intrigued by your comment on lighter steering - can you explain that a little more or maybe quantify it on a scale of 1 to 10 before and after the change.
Yours is the r53 type?

My R50 (53 Cooper - no TC) has 16s and my Mrs R53 (I think it's an R53 - 08 Cooper S Conv with ASC) has 17s
I'll probably go for 195/55/16 Toyo T1R on mine (same as I have on my MX5) but I'd prefer something that works better in winter on my Mrs car.
