There you go, now it makes sense so we can all tell you how wrong you are.
What is smart about a Smart?
Do Lotus make cars out of flowers?
Why doesn't an Ariel have a radio?
Will an Infiniti go on forever?
Why don't Jaguars have real fur seats?
Why does a Seat have more than one seat?

...and why all the fuss about the Mini when the new Fiat 500 has more than 500cc. Surely that should be called the Fiat 1400 (or whatever cc it is now??)...

At least Ford had the sense to name their supercar the Ford GT rather than resurrecting the GT40 name as it's taller than the 40" of the original.

OP has a good point though.... I wish they'd have called it the MAXI or something.

Why ? A MINI hatch is very small compared to say a Golf.

The latest range of mini's contryman etc are getting quite big for the name "mini".

Ford did not use GT40 becuse they do not own the name, so had to call the car GT

Let's try some real data (courtesy carpages.co.uk) and compare the MINI against its market rivals:

MINI DS3 A1 MiTo
Length 3723 3948 3954 4063
Width 1683 1715 1740 1720
Height 1407 1483 1416 1446

In every case, the MINI is the smaller vehicle.
Width excludes wing mirrors.
The models were selected before getting the dimensions.

So, the DS3 driver who didn't follow me through a >mm< gap in the traffic last week made a wise decision.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought the OP was talking about the Countryman.

Using the cars above, the Countryman is larger than all the cars mentioned. I like the 'new' MINI if we're talking about the BMW MINI, but if 'new MINI' means the countryman, as I interpretted it, its not a fitting name IMO.

Errr... maybe it's because the Countryman is not in the same category as the A1/MEETOO/DS3?

So maybe it's a mini pseudo-off roader like a Qashqai or X3 etc... so the its size needs to be compared to those, not that I know if it'll be smaller actually ! It'll definitely be uglier though...

Absolutely, couldnt agree more. So why is it called a MINI? Or am I wrong, and refering to it as a MINI is like refering to the above as a Nissan or BMW, and really I should refer to it as a Countryman?

So you can make of that what you will. He might well have meant the Countryman, but he might have meant the Clubman, Roadster/Coupe or even the standard hatch/convertible!

Yeah, true.

Perhaps I've jumped to conclusions as I personally think the Countryman is too big to be called a MINI and have had a few non-petrol head friend/family say the same (I own a Cooper S, so they naturally think I know about MINIs! smile)

People need to realise that MINI is a brand, just like Ford, Mercedes, BMW, etc are, it's no longer one small model smile

Just what I was keying, when I thought best make sure nobody has said so. You beat me to it.

Nonetheless, just to reiterate:

It's a BRAND!
