hope someone can give me abit of help....

I bought a upgraded intercooler fot my 2003 MCS, i bought it from the states, its exactly the same spec as the GRS intercoolers.. having put it on and starting it up, (just ticking over) it started to rev its selfs up and down, between 1000 - 1500rpm ?? also the manifolf was glowing after 5minutes?? at first i though oxy/lamba sensor but they are fine. ive had it to a mini specailist and he seems to think its the cooler? its taking to much air in? its on a standard pully but ive got a 15% pully to go on, would this help with the charger spinning faster due to the smaller size and wanting more air to cool it??

Please help me solve my mini problem, its been off the road 2weeks and its killing me lol

When you say exactly the same spec, does that mean its a cheaper copy?

The specialist said the intercooler is taking too much air in?

Are you sure there isnt an air leak somewhere?

You either have a boost leak causing the engine to run lean, which would cause the glowing manifold, or the lower quality intercooler is restrictive.

if im honest i didnt think it fitted great, well not like that standard 1 anyway. the rubber couples arnt the best' would it help it i got some alta silocone ones? i literary just loosened the 4 bolts holding the original cooler down, took the couplings off, put them on the new cooler and fitted it... it didnt do it straight away, after about 5minutes..

Thankyou for you quick response and help.

Spray some car cleaner around the intercooler mounts, if it gets sucked in you will hear the engine note change.

Can you put up some photos? Got a link to the part you bought?

The hunting at idle does suggest a vacuum leak. Have you tried reseating the hoses?
I'm not sure on the fitting on the minis but is there a vacuum pipe anywhere that might have been left off i.e. for a bypass valve or idle control valve?

Sounds like a leak to me. When you say the manifold is glowing do you mean the exhaust or intake? If its the exhaust could be a blocked cat. A glowing intake and I'd be very worried. Also for the extra £75 I would have bought the GRS as Graham's after service it top notch. Also don't use aftermarket silicon intercooler couplers the don't work on the r53 very well. I found the constantly and switched back to a good pair of stock ones
