hey

considering a new car for next year and just starting looking at these, generally i dont like new minis but i quite like the GP so thought id ask people what they are like as i only tend to see them at PH meets. hehe I dont care that it has two seats and insurance shouldnt be an issue but what are they like to run and live with, they dont seem to depreciate that badly seeing as its a mini which is a good thing.

cheers

I would like to jump onto this thread too as it is only the GP that has the Recaro style seats or do some JC Works also have these. I am looking to possibly change my e39 M5 as it is the dubios position of being written off following a minor shunt buy a third party.

So either a Mini Cooper S GP or a JCW Cooper S. Also do the GP works still have a boot and fold down seats (in the absence of back seats)?

Recaro's are an option on all MINI's but come in at about £2.5k so they only generally appear on higher spec cars.

afaik the GP has a flat floor running right up to the front seats so no boot as such but it does open

What are the GP's weaknesses ie what should look out for if you buy an old 2006 model? Are they oil burners and if so do they burn anymore than a Cooper S. What is the guideline on oil burning per mile.

What things are likely to fail or have failed/any recalls on specific items? Are the GP brakes single pot calipers or multi? What is the disc size on a 2006 as I see the new ones are F 330mm/ R 280mm - drilled/slotted ?

What are the main real world differences between a newer Cooper S and a GP? I will either get an old GP or a newer Cooper S with Bluetooth and xenons and put in some Recaro seats. The seats do not worry me it is more performance and usability.

Any information from owners or enthusiasts much appreciated.

There is actually a new GP due out later this year with 218 BHP and lots of goodies, the list price is pretty much the same as a well specced cooper S ( I can take a deposit off you if you like biggrin)

The old GP's are supercharged whereas the new one will be a twin scroll turbo.

I'm not sure on pro's and cons for the old ones as I haven't been with MINI that long but have been in one and they sound fantastic with the supercharger whine. The new one should pop and bang nicely too as the current JCW sounds great so the GP should be even better.

I saw the following on Saturday at Castle Combe & it might broaden your ideas/options? I think the car might be at a PH SS soon if the guys can get a place on the entry list! I understand they have fitted an upgrade bodykit, engine mods, upgrade exhaust & interior with reclining lightweight sports seats...apologies for the smart phone pics!

I would be interested to hear how noisy they are on a long motorway journey too. Having read some posts about the pointlessness of getting a Parrot BT system put in due to noise.

Is it impossible to hold a conversation when travelling at speed without shouting?

Was just coming on here to see if there were any threads about these, having the same thoughs as a few here.

I want something I can track and use on the road and for my budgets, I really can't see there is much else for the used price of these which is as focused. Megane R.R (or whatever its called) still going for big bucks if you can track one down.

Just wondering though, quite a price premium for the GP, wonder if it might be cheaper to get a Works and spend the change on modifying it to be a track car. I know the engine revisions are exclusive, but a lot of the other stuff, could probably be done cheaper. Interested to hear any thoughts.

And as repayment for hi-jacking, I'll post some awesome GP footage, looks very stable at speed and under breaking and seems to grip like mad. Really way more impressive than I was expecting.

But presumably that means these do not fit the GP as it is a R53 motor. R53 presumably designating the change from turbo charger to R56 supercharger?
