Afternoon all,

I need a a small fun car to run around locally in - predominantly to go to the station whenI have to get into London. However I want something that is a bit of a hoot and great for blowing the cobwebs away down my local country lanes. I have tried alot of cars and nothing comes close to the Cooper S or JCW hatch. I'm looking at spending about £10k so it's either going to be a poverty spec 08 JCW or well specc'd 09 Cooper S.

So what do people recommend? Are there any must have options?

Cheers,
David

The dealer is none to clever though is he - ? Where is the rear windscreen wiper or the cloth seats or indeed the split rims. Are you sure it is not a Nigerian who wants your mother's maiden name???

Get an older supercharged (r53) if you don't care about mpgs or and want maximum smiles per mile. A JCW would be great.

More reliable than early r56s too.

True, I just grabbed the first ad I found as an indicator of where David's budget could go. In the best BBC tradition, "Other GPs are available." smile

Thanks all,

Well I've gone against the grain and opted for a Cooper S with alot of options. Haggled really hard with the main dealer and got it for a good price - in fact just over a thousand quid more than the wbac price for that car. I've always bought with my heart and lost shed loads on motors over the years. The difference in wbac was just over a 1k on th cooper s compared to nearly 5k on the jcw. Oh dear I've also broken the man maths rules :0)

Man maths would dictate the GP; the price seems to have hardly shifted from 12K (+/- 1K) for the last two years thereby allowing zero-cost car bragging rights. However, the first rule of man maths is that all other rules may be adjusted to justify the purchase wink

I'm sure you'll enjoy the R56 S, just make sure the oil level is kept up. And, no, I can't help you with reading the dipstick as I've never worked out how to identify the level on the R56. As far as I can tell the end is orange, and it might have some oil on it. I think it is also true that the oil warning light on the dash means it's too late and the engine is already goosed.
