Pretty sure this is the last problem i need to resolve & this one's now really annoying me as yet again the outcome on my F10 is totally different yet surely the systems must be similar. The Mini is a brand new Countryman Cooper S with HK Audi Upgrade.

I've a 64GB USB stick that's formatted MS-DOS (Fat) & have copied across about 20GB of Music in .m4a format. All the Albums are listed alphabetically which is fine but for some reason in the car the number of tracks within some of the albums doubles (so a 21 track album now has 42 tracks) & when you skip from track 1-2 is says not available & auto skips to track 3 which is really track 2.

Also some Album names that are shown on the USB stick correctly i.e. Now 88 display as the full Album name in the car Now That's What I Call Music 88 which is frustrating as the display isn't big enough so i've no idea which album it is. Also the doubling of tracks occurs in these albums too.

Is also odd as some of the albums for instance Adele's 21 had this doubling effect but then after a while it fixed itself & the correct number of tracks were displayed but other albums were still incorrect. This is viewing as Albums. If i view in the car as files, the Album names become really weird & other software elements on the USB stick appear which is again odd as i formatted the USB stick fully before i copied the music across.

Any ideas what's going on as i can't find anything online??

Nobody had this issue??

Seems to affect Compilation albums mainly. On iTunes they're dealt with & displayed correctly & same in my M5, but the Mini seems to be doing the strangest thingsfrown

No, not seen this before.

From the doubled list and artefacts it sounds as though the car might have cached the contents from the first time the USB stick was inserted (the names are copied across, it takes about five minutes on the R56) and is now doubling up the playlist. Your post implies the USB stick works OK on your M5 so the MINI having retained an out of date list after editing is plausible. Maybe giving the USB stick a different label would make the MINI think it's a new one and reset the playlist. On Windows you can do this from Explorer by selecting the disk in the 'Computer' view and pressing F2. If it uses the serial number, that would be a lot harder to change.

Otherwise, try reformatting the stick in NTFS; the FAT system is quite old and could be upset if the entire file pathname exceeds 255 characters or has non-alpha-numeric characters.

Bit more info...

Spoke to one of the auto engineers down the corridor who has worked on car audio.
1. FAT32 is most commonly supported format; wasn't sure if NTFS would be.
2. 64GB is big; and would take "over 20 minutes" to index. If you want to hold this much, use an iPod for your full playlist (so that the indexing is outside the head unit) with a 4GB stick for your favourites. At least that way you can get in and start playing tracks.
3. The disk is indexed when plugged in and the data is held in RAM (temporary memory). This should be cleared when the disk is removed.
4. Tell BMW, they may have a software update for the head unit. He was always finding new file names and arrangements that broke the indexing.

Not exactly a fix, but might give you a better idea of what's going on under the hood.

It's possible the problem is Digital Rights Management, copying across onto the memory stick, and using it in a different media, is it ok when you play back on the computer it was copied from ? I had this problem copying from a bought that's what I call Music CD, it would continously play a different track if the track it was supposed to play had DRM encryption.

Quickest and easiest solution (although not cheapest) is to go on ebay and buy a second hand iPod.

We use a 16Gb iPod mini in our R56 and have never had a moments bother with it.
Thanks.

Is that connected by the Media cable (line in & usb one end with an iPod/iphone connector at the other albeit for older iPhones)? Is their a size limit as i think the wife has a 128gb iPod stashed away in a drawer? Only issue with an iPod attached is cables on view (pet hate of mine) & the iPod rattling around in the centre console.

Thanks, good info.

The current USB stick is now a 32gb with about 16gb on it. Most of the albums are no longer being doubled up so am getting closer to a fix, however Compilations are still being held in a single album & displayed incorrectly. Normal single disc albums & some compilations are now being displayed & dealt with correctly.

Using Now That's What i Call Christmas as an example (sorry for the poor show having an Xmas album in the car but it is getting closer). On the USB stick out of the Mini i.e. in my M5 or on my computer, the directory structure shows & deals with this album as 3 separate albums Disc 1/2/3 which is correct & each album/disc has circa 22 tracks on it. The album is also renamed Now Christmas so it can be viewed/read on a smaller display such as the Mini's. For some reason in the Mini the album still presents itself with the long album name so can't easily be recognised (more of an issue with the Now number albums such as 81/82/83 etc.) where on the Mini's screen you can't see what number they are which is why i shortened those too to Now 81/82. Theses albums also for some unknown reason merge into 1 disc so it's Now That's What i Call Christmas with 66 tracks & they're also jumbled up so not track 1-22 from disc 1 followed by track 1-22 from disc 2.

This has also happened to all the other Now albums & a few other compilation albums.

Any ideas as this one is baffling me? I'll try renaming the USB stick in case the cache thing is causing issues.

My understanding of Apple's naming is:
*.m4a, open audio
*.m4p, DRM audio
*.m4r, ringtone

Yes, via the media cable. We stash the iPod in the netting on the passenger footwell. Album art, playlists, videos etc all load up OK. Ive used my 160Gb classic in there too with no problem.
Rumour is that the new MINI can cope with an iPod via the normal USB cable. Don't know if it's true but is very easy to try and would save you the cost of a media cable (this powers the iPod via USB, but plays from the headphone audio).

We have got the media cable but really don't like cables being on show as looks untidy (my OCD);)

How does the Advanced Cradle deal with Audio, is it Bluetooth so basically any tunes on the iPhone can be BT streamed? Got an Advanced Cradle in my M5 for my iPhone 5S but am thinking of moving to a 6 or 6 Plus so i could move my cradle across to the Wife's Mini.

Sorry, don't know how it works. A quick search on YouTube implies it's a BT connection on the BMW so I'd assume it works in the same way on the MINI. Best thing is to try it at the dealer and make sure it does what you need.

Download MP3TAG and you can edit the file metadata - so can shorten the titles and number the tracks in the compilations so they play in the correct order.

I had the same issue in my Countryman with the War of the Worlds (marginally better than a Christmas album... but only just) so just renumbered the tracks from the second CD so they were sequential to the first CD (before hand both CDs were numbered from 1, so my MINI played CD1 track 1, followed by CD2 track 1, then CD1 track 2 etc).

Note the title the MINI displays is not the name of the file or folder, it is the title in the file metadata.

Thanks, that's good info & will seek out that application (is their a Mac version?)

Also confirmation above of how the folders are handled. Makes sense I guess although bloody annoying.

Upgrading my iPhone this week to a 6 so will give er indoors my 5s along with the Advanced cradle from my M5 so she can either use her iPhone as the source of all things tuneful or plug an iPod into the USB port & I'll do away with the USB stick solution.

Npt sure if this helps or not be we have the last generation mini and we have this. Both tracks are playable so you love sten to the track which then repeats then moves onto the next track.

So far i have not found a cure. This happened to one of our minis by the way but when same stick with no changes put in another mini it was fine
