Hi Folks,

The Mini has been going great for the last few months having had the rad replaced in August. Had a full service in September and a spotless MOT. All good so far.

Now, on Sunday morning Em' called me saying that Mindy (2003 Mini Cooper Petrol) had stalled, stuttered and when she restarted it the 'Engine' symbol was now illuminated on the main dash. I am currently working away and as such I have had to try and diagnose this from afar. Sadly this isn't going to plan as Em' hasn't really got any idea of if Mindy is running right. I have ascertained that she isn't in limp mode, seems to be turning over ok, but seems a little laboured? A google has given me contradicting info, hence the post here, stating that it is a 'service indicator' in Canada. Given she had a full service 600 miles ago I doubt I'm that lucky. The other description is, it being exhaust or emissions related. So I wondered if Lambda sensor or if she is blowing from her pipes? Any Ideas folkies?

Now, I have been slowly improving Mindy ever since I got her for Em' so I am more than happy if the exhaust has died as it is an excuse to upgrade. This is part two of the post. Any suggestions on what to go for? I am pleased with the MPG the Em' gets, current avg 42mpg, I'd like to either keep this or preferably improve it. I would also like to make Mindy sound a bit meatier, not OTT as we live in a quiet area and I do not want to upset the neighbours. I have found 2 cat back systems on the Bay of E. One is a Miltek? cat back, circa £380 the other a Scorpion cat back, Circa £260. Both SS reportedly so should last a while.

So, in short, what's the light? Will she be ok continuing to use Mindy until I am home next Wed, (est 300 Miles ish to go on her)? What exhaust is a good upgrade for power, throttle response and a deeper burble?

If you have made it this far, thank you and all the best!

Olly

A late reply, so you may have already got it sorted.

It sounds to me that it may be the crank and or cam position sensor.

If these decide to no longer work, the engine will feel restricted the further in to the revs you go.

Alternatively it could be an O2 sensor, as this would have a similar affect.

Best bet is to get it on a code reader as it should pinpoint the issue.

Hope you get it sorted cheaply!
