Hi, I know very little about these cars and my wife is looking for an 07/08 Cooper 1.6. Are there any problems that I should be looking out for on these and are they generally reliable.
Any guide on running costs and what they are like to drive would be appreciated.
Current car is Swift 1.5 which actually drives pretty well and averages 43mpg.
Budget £6K max.

I think the Cooper model is generally reliable. Big issue is the timing chain on the Cooper S models - but that is sporadic. Oil consumption also afflicts the Cooper S - but not heard any issues on the Cooper.

Other than general checks for accident damage etc. I would also check the tyre condition if using the expensive run flat tyres. They can have rattly interiors (mine doesn't) so just check that on a test drive if it will bother you.

I have a Clubman Cooper S, and average 38 mpg. Going easy I can get 43mpg. So I would imagine a Cooper should do slightly better than this.

I had a 58 plate Cooper, but it was a bit of a garage princess (lots of niggles but nothing serious). Main issue was the windows, it went back several times to get them fixed - they forgot the home position so you'd wind them up, only for them to think they'd gone too far and wind back down half-way. It swapped randomly from side to side too. Bizarre.

The gearbox was truly nasty (so bad my next Mini was an auto) but this is per car as none of the (three) demo cars I drove were anything like as bad. If it takes two arms to get into reverse, there's plenty of others out there.

One occasion it went into limp mode as some oil breather had clogged up. Too many short town journey's on my part, I did 10K in 3.5 years.

Despite it running cold most of the time, it returned close to 50mpg on 15" Conti EcoContact wheels. I probably should have ragged it - it would have avoided the breather issue and the MoT tester said the rear brakes were well down on efficiency due to lack of use. The amount I was saving on petrol by lifting of the throttle and slowing in anticipation would be counter-balanced by new disks. Ying and yang.

Xenons are a good option to seek out as the standard lights were pretty useless. Parking sensors too as it's surprisingly hard to place.

(The auto Cooper gets about 43mpg on 16". It's done 5K in 2.5 years; pretty much my annual push bike mileage.)

Picked up a 10 plate cooper for the Mrs in September.

Few points from ours, I’m going to book it in with Mini next week to get it checked over for the tensioner problem. Might be paranoia, but it seems quite noisy, almost rough at times, but then I’m comparing it to the N52 3.0 in my 330.

Interior can creak quite a bit, ours was horrendous on test drive and I told the garage the only way I’d do the deal was if they sorted it. Spent a day in the workshop which removed the main dash rattle. Still a few little creaks from elsewhere, but not enough to annoy you.

Economy wise, we’re getting about 36 mpg at the moment which is a mixture of short runs and 20 mile round trip commutes through urban traffic.

The engine in them is the EP6C/5FS that's in Citroens and Peugeot, not bad and fairly frugal if driven nicely.
