Looking for our first MINI

Hi all,
Looking to buy a second car for my partner for work as I'm looking for a van myself. She has decided she wants a MINI cooper, at the minute were thinking diesel but really cant decide if it would be a better buy than the petrol version.
Our current Rav4 has DPF issues and having had the same issues with a Zafira I dont really want them with the MINI also, when do they start to go on MINI's?
We have a budget of £5000 to spend and have no part ex, looking for around a 07-09 plate depending on miles and specs. Anyone got one for sale?

It sounds like your car usage maybe causing the dpf issues if you have had two cars with the same issue. Lots of short, start/ stop journeys?
Therefore, I would avoid a diesel. The Cooper model you are looking at are fairly robust, so checking it will be the obvious. Check if run flats tyres need replacing, as they can be pricey.
You won't get death rattle issue (timing chain), power steering, airbag issues, gearbox issues with an 2009 cooper.

Never owned one, but we had a 2010 Cooper D as a pool car, almost never left central London.
Never had any issues at all. Survived 4 years of abuse without missing a beat. The odd time I took it home it did feel a little low powered on back roads, motorway was fine. Rarely went below 40mpg despite city abuse. Was rather impressed with it in all honesty.

Why diesel, exactly my point, I don't know what I want!
Likely it's the short sightedness of general MPG fuel economy.
We currently have just the RAV4, planning on the cover for her and a T5 van for me as we're finding 1 car a struggle now with kids getting older.
Found a 2009 on a 58 plate petrol to go look at tomorrow now.
Any known issues with the petrol models as it sounds like there is with the diesels, funny I drove a diesel on Sunday that was rattling, now guess that was the death rattle. 😂

Death Rattle only affects the 'Cooper S' model, not diesel, Cooper or One models.
I reckon something is going to happen shortly with Diesel cars to encourage people out of them. A scrappage scheme for diesels has just been rejected, reported less than an hour ago......

So, if this method is too expensive, they 'need' another mechanism to encourage people out of them. I reckon rising taxation on RFL or diesel per litre to overcome the NO2 emissions emitted by diesels and creating local pollution hot spots.
So be careful before plumping for a diesel again. (says the owner of a diesel car

The MK2 Mini Cooper engine is not as robust as the MK1, but it got better after 2009/2010 I believe. Do some research but there are many tails of engine total engine failure in the earlier MK2 cars, and oil consumption is a major issue (1L per 500-1000 miles) However, you have to bear in mind how many of these cars are on the road still. So I would either get a later, low mileage version of the MK1 (up to 2006) or the newest car you can get for your budget.

This is not true.
The mk1 Cooper suffered from power steering failure and gear box failures.
The mk2 Cooper is robust. This is what the OP wants.
The mk2 Cooper S has the well documented death rattle (resultant engine failure in some instances) and high oil consumption.
My Clubman S (2007, and same engine as the mk2 Cooper S) is still going strong. Timing chain tensioner replaced in 2011. Still uses oil at a high rate - but shouldn't you check the oil regularly anyway? This is where some owners have failed, I believe.
