Dear all, first post in this section as just bought a low mileage 2008 Cooper S for the wife. Despite being otherwise immaculate after investigating a misfire and hesitation under throtlle etc I find myself here - sure you will all be familiar with this story!

Anyways on several threads there were indications of best places to go, but these lists seem last updated a couple of years ago and prices have changed drastically.

Does anyone have any experience of where this can be done in the north east inexpensively? The cheapest dealer locally charges £310 in Newcastle, the dearest (my nearest naturally) over £480!

Have many specialists got their hands on this kit yet? My nearest dealer expressed surprise - I don't theirs gets much use!

My Indie did mine for £150 and I watched him doing it, some of the prices quoted for this work around the country varies a huge amount, but I do think traveling to nuneaton to get it done will add some to the bill.

Ended up going to Newcastle today, just waiting on the car back, fingers crossed it works.

Agreed some of the indies are much more competitive, so will try and plan this ahead in future services, maybe once every 15-20k or so which will make it worthwhile. Can't see any specialists closer to me than the Midlands unfortunately, perhaps that situation may change though.

I think you may need a new high pressure fuel pump (or something else), a de coke is more about getting general performance back not a cure for misfire or poor runing.

Carbon build up on the inlets will cause poor running, generate knock codes and can cause missfires as the carbon build up can cause loss of compression and port combustion.

High pressure fuel pump can cause running issues, but mainly cutting out from cold start.

It worked! If ever there was a wakeup call for idiots ruining cars with continuous start-stop driving it was this. The tech said it was totally borked with black stuff and took him ages. Beware the little old lady low mileage vehicle - this car has 16.5 k on it for chrissakes!

My missus has an annoying habit of "just popping over" to pick up my spoiled daughter from work all of 5 mins walk away in broad daylight. She might think twice when the next £350 is picked up by us rather than the supplying dealer.

Now I've had to do some research I'm aware of the other Cooper S "character" issues like the fuel pump and timing chain. Just need to find a decent indie and the next decoke can be more affordably built into a service a few more down the line.

There is a lad who runs a local north East Mini Forum (full on minis - well worth a join!) who also works at the Seat dealer in Benton, Newcastle. He has persuaded his bosses to buy the kit and is currently testing it out on his car before getting other people booked in... says it should be sub £200 thumbup:

Bumping this. I'd like to get this done on my 2007 R56, or at least get a quote. Anyone know a place local (ish) to High Wycombe who may be able to do it?

Did read that Sytner High Wycombe had the capabilities but they informed me it was only for specific vehicles and mine wasn't one of them!?

Unless your R56 is not a Cooper S or jcw, this process is exactly for your car, and sytner are talking bks, not a surprise, all direct injection engine's suffer from coking of the inlet valves.

I know, mine's a Cooper S with the dreaded N14 so perfect for blasting. Did point this out to the service guy but may well pop down there in person too. I think they do it in Tring too but Wycombe would be much more convenient as I'm only 3 minutes from the dealer.

Just FYI after a couple of months the mpg figures have improved dramatically after the decoke, like 50% more!

The first couple of fillups before the decoke were about 30mpg, which I was warned by those "in the know" were typical for a Cooper S with a heavy right welly. It's now doing a confirmed 43 average if anything using the performance more as it's so much nicer to drive.

So if you think yours needs doing no point dawdling as it could be paying for itself as well as doing the engine good

Another bump - wife is now considering an R56. I have had an R53 for 11 years, but little experience of the R56.

Does the head need to come off for this?

No, head stays on, the inlet manifold is removed and walnut shells blasted at the closed inlet valves, does not take too long to do once set up.

I have a 'new to me' 2013 cooper D with N47 direct injection 1.6 diesel engine.
Covered 87k and has a hesitation on light throttle sometimes.
Do you think this could be down to coking?

No, but check around the injectors for signs of carbon build up.
