Young driver insurance cost

Looking to buy a car, probably 07 / 08 for my daughter who will hopefully pass her test sometime in the near future.
Started looking at Toyota Aygo, but gave realised that insurance on Mini's is similar.
That said, on line insurance seems to be significantly cheaper on a 1.6 copper, than a 1.4 mini one.
To me, this doesn't seem right given the extra engine size and performance.
Can anyone confirm this is correct and not a 'direct line's glitch, I don't want to buy something that we on after find is too expensive to insure.

It's just a numbers game. New drivers expect a One to be cheaper so they all buy them. The one then gets a poor rep for accidents and price goes up, in the meantime the coopers are not having accidents and stay down.
Same thing with keeping a car on drive can be cheaper than in garage.
Run it through a comparison site and see what comes up. That way you know you are not reliant upon 1 insurer.

it's all about claims experience ... arguably the car is one of the least relevant factors in car insurance Same thing with keeping a car on drive can be cheaper than in garage.

comapred to driver / age / experience / history and the locality the vehicle is kept and driven in ...
younger / less expereinced rivers have more crashes and tend to have more spectacualr crashes as well ( plus the car full of students is rather more expensive in terms of the potential personal injury claims than a singleton or couple a few years older)
