Hi all

I've just purchased a 2002 mini cooper S. The car itself has done over 111k but it's had a refurbished engine put in it with around 35K.

The whine of the supercharger is surprisingly loud from inside & out the car, now I've had no experience with mini's other then them driving past. I've never noticed the whine being that loud before and was wondering if this is normal.

Thanks

I would say they're pretty loud, it's just the nature of the type of supercharger they use.

Also, not sure what year it changed, but later superchargers had teflon coated rotors which helped.

Or, if the teflon coating has started to wear or chip, it can increase turbulence on that microscopic 'edge' of the teflon which can also make it noisier.

(I've had both types on my MX5 until I blew it up)

Check the pollen filter is fitted - removing it is a cheap way to get more whine, maybe someone previous did that? Or maybe a smaller pulley is fitted, spinning the charger faster?

AIUI the main reason for SC failure on the mini isn't the supercharger itself, but the gear driven waterpump drive off the back

I'll check the filter, how do i check the pulley and where is it located.

Just check the engine oil and that's pretty low. Will that effect it?

I've taken a short video

Thanks again everyone

That's not the charger, it's the pas pump

Sounds like the charger to me. The PAS whines when you turn the wheel and sounds awful on MINIs.

The whine goes with the rev of the engine that's why i think its the charger.

Does it make the same noise with the clutch depressed? To me it does not 'quite' sound like the supercharger as I can hear the whining at low revs. Could be belts?

I am completely guessing though.

Pollen filter is underneath & behind glovebox, although that doesn't sound like the supercharger to me - I've not driven mine for over a month but I don't remember it whining when not under load like it does in the video

What airbox have you got on. These can make a big difference.

Went out and gave it a good drive as it's been sat for awhile.
When driving it i put the clutch in and coasted and the whine goes.
The Air box is the standard air box i believe.

I had virtually no whine on my 03 MCS unless it was under load so I would say theres an issue elsewhere. Alternator/aircon maybe?

That's definitely not right. We've got a modified airborne on ours and it's sounds nothing like that. You shouldn't be hear the charger whine at idle.

Is the steering wheel lock straight with no pressure on the PAS pump? The pump is a common problem on these. Just changed mine as it was failing. £300 just for the part. Easy to fix yourself though ifor you're confident enoughost and have a look through the Mini torque forums.

Well took it to my local garage and they think it's a baring that's gone.

Clutch release bearing?

There are quite a lot of bearing in a car, including in the supercharger! Put us out our misery?
