Wing Mirror Covers

I've just bought a 08 R56 Cooper and it has Union Jack Wing Mirror Covers which I don't like, I think they are the stick on jobbies rather than the OEM clip on version. I want to replace them with either silver or chrome (Chilli red car) has anyone tried to remove these (with any success)? Obviously I can clip off the underlying OEM caps but the OEM replacements can be expensive and it looks like Chrome isn't one of the options so I'd have to go with new stick-ons. I believe the stick ons are applied with double sided 3M tape will this have damaged the original covers? Will it come off at all?
