Hi Guys

Have had my 05 plate Cooper S for two days now and love it completely, but have today noticed what seems like a burnt oil smell or is this the smell of the car when warm.

This is when it has been from home to work or on a run and has warmed up to half way up the temperature gauge, but the car is not really pushed past 3k revs at the moment

Checked the oil today when the car was cold and on the dip stick it seems to be half way up, going to get some oil tomorrow to top up.

There is no worrying noises on start up or when driving or when the car is warm.

Just wondered if I should worry about this or just run the car and enjoy it?

Have you checked to see if there are any very minor oil leaks? Using the powers of Google the normal 'possibles' are:-
Crank sensor O ring
Sump gasket
Oil Filter housing
Timing chain tensioner plug.
Rear main seal (can weep along the sump gasket)
Front main seal (same as the rear with weeping)
Rocker cover gasket
Gearbox Input shaft seal (can also give an impression of a leaking sump)

I had an oil smell from my R56 when I bought it and even though I've now attended to the rocker cover leak, the oil I used for the recent change generates more of a smell than you'd expect although it is an uprated oil.

Thank you for the info. I will look into what you suggested.

I'd keep using it and just keep an eye on the oil level.

Keep an eye on the oil level? Check it before and after driving the next few times.
If it's not moving you're all good. If it is, then have a look at the list above.

These engines can/will smell hot.

Thank you for all the advice, The mini is in at the end of the month to get the rocker gasket replaced as it is weeping slightly as I got him check out last week.

The dipstick still mystifies me on how to read it properly and when is the best time to check the oil level.

Any ideas anyone??????????????/
