Hi,
I was driving my 02 1.6 mini cooper on a busy roundabout last week and I could see the puddle in front but had no way to avoid (same goes for all the other cars around me unless we were to do an illegal turn) I went quite slow, matching the speed with the car infront until it got splashing on my windscreen blocking my view and I slowed right down.
A day before this happened I heard a small sound that could only be heard whilst in gear and after this puddle it now sounds like a gargling sound with loud rattling but again only when im in gear.
There are 4 bolts ontop of the engine and one is super loose but it doesn't seem to tighten? Just spins around aimlessly.. Im hoping that's the only issue with my car but I imagine ill get a right good mincing for leaving this problem for 6 days (only form of transport to work and pay day)
All help appreciated
Thank you

You must know someone that is into cars, ask them to have a look and maybe repair/jam the loose bolt & go from there - good luck smile

pic of loose bolt?

air filter housing on that car is quite high and at the back with the intake at the front above the radiator, but the inlet manifold body is very low at the front, so if it took a gulp of water it is possible some has got into the manifold and may need checking, but it may be something quite different, nothing to do with water.

1. It's the coil pack:

If this is faulty, you would most likely experience misfires.

The four bolts just hold it in place, there's nothing underneath that might gurgle:

If one bolt has stripped the thread, it's not going to cause other problems. You could try retaining it with gaffer tape, but I doubt it would cause the in-gear only rattle.

2. Does the rattle change when you depress the clutch pedal? If it disappears when you push in the clutch, it could be the release bearing has worn.

3. Pop open the airbox and look for water pooling:

4. Also, check the exhaust, especially near the mounts.

you don't need an msd coil pack, the bolt won't cause an issue either. if the bolt isn't started in the thread it won't begin to tighten, so you could take the coil off and see what's affecting the bolt, it may just need the other three loosening before that one will start in the thread, although unlikely.

check some of the heat shields too perhaps, they can vibrate against the body causing noises, even the shield in your pic is bent, and this can rattle to, try tapping it below the coolant tank pictured, and you may hear it or the one next to it on the cars left, mine was and it bends easily if req.

Only a thought.
