Help - Coolant leaking from water pump to block seal
Discussion
Help!
After months of looking for a JCW, I find one that I like... 3 weeks later I am leaking coolant!
AA man says that it's not the rads or the hoses, but believes that it's the seal between the water pump and the block! -
Any one attemted this challenge before or should I take it to the dealer?

from the left could be
The hose connection to the engine, rad, or pump. The pump is a separate unit from the block so it wont be any gaskets. You should be able to feel around the pump on a one to see if the water is coming from there, alternatively you will need to try and locate the leak from below. it is most likely to be a pipe cracking or come loose

Hi,
Our mini cooper s 2005 leaked water too, Try looking at the thermostat housing which mounts onto the gearbox end of the cyl. head. When it leaks it runs around the back of the engine and leaves a pool of water around the same area on the floor.
It's actually quite easy to fix if this is your problem, airbox out and a few pipes. You can do it in about an hour. (if thats what it is)
We replaced the thermostat and housing, about £30-40 total. The seal is part of the thermostat.
Quite common.

Hope this will help us both.
I filled the rad and header tank full of cold water tonight and drove the Mini home , about 5 miles.
Water level in the header was unchanged, but there was leaking down below. You simply cannot see anything on these cars can you?
Got the front off the Mini.(bumper/rad)
Bottom hose all OK as is the top one.
Water pump area looks dry.
With the rad off the car and the outlet of the bottom hose blanked off water tight i filled the rad half full of clear water. The base of the rad is quite corroded where the plastic header moulding is crimped to the core, about the lower 50mm of both ends.
With the wife staring at the base of the rad lower outlet i blew hard into the top to 'pressurise' the rad. The small 'drip-drip-drip' changed to a much faster drip...etc.
I think this is the final leak point!
Need to find a rad now in the Wolverhampton/Birmingham area asap.

Found it! The leak is coming from the 2 seals which link the waterpump to the block, there is no evidence that the waterpump itself is leaking.
I did speak with the Mini 'stealer' in Derby and they quoted £450 to replace the 2 rubber O rings which cost £4.00! - are they on this planet?
So I had a go this evening (having ordered the seals) waterpump is out and I have found that one of the rubber seals is very flat and brittle has been letting the coolant through.
I won't jump for joy just yet, I'll wait until I have put it back together! Will keep you posted!

This may help for you trying to locate the leak

If its seal No2 then you have a hell of a job on to sort that out, if you take out the intercooler, injectors and rail, LH cooling horn, inlet manifold, you should be able to just about get to it, failing that its the front end modular system off, belt off, blower out with the pump. if you find its the pump let me know I have one in the garage
If you need a new rad the best thing I can advise is you pop on to www.totalmini.com scroll down to Wollaston MINI and ring Chris as they normally offer a 10% and upwards discount on the parts alternatively there is a mini seconds shop off the M54 north of Wolverhampton who may be able to help name is Mat http://www.minimatt.co.uk/
I presume you will do the job yourself but if you want someone to give the car a good look over and check everything, www.thinkmini.co.uk Dave is a mini specialist local to the area too

Minimat I've used before, very good, but away for Easter.
Bought a rad from Rad Services in Bilston for £97 and popped it all back in in under the hour!
Runs ok, no leaks.
Rad guy said they are having quite a run on Mini rads....beware.
Daughter now happy if £100 worse off (£3 for labour is a bit weak)and the end of yet another Mini Adventure.
What will be next? The clutch??

Well done! you will be a busy boy at £3 for a rad change! form a line
Depends how hard you drive it, I got just over 50k out of mine the one and cooper clutch should last much longer
BMW would have charged £100 just to tell you that there is a problem

Thanks everyone for your advice, just finished putting it back together last night! managed to remove the waterpump without taking out the supercharger, was tight, but is very do-able. Ended up changing the waterpump too, just for good measure. All seems leak free.
If anyone else wants to have a go, happy to help.... with advice obviously.

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone can help me.
I have a Mini Cooper Park Lane 2006 and have had a leak problem for a good few months now! i taken it to a garage and they said it was the water pump, so they fixed it... everything seemed good for a couple weeks, no leaks or anything... then the leaks start again! its defo coolant because my tank is empty when i look and with having white flags its easy to see the colour. i just want to know if anyone has had the same problem and knows what it is before i take it to the garage.
Thanks
Aidan
