I have a Mini Cooper S 2003,the seats are very uncomfortable and I have a real back problem caused by them. So I'm looking to change for some after market bucket type seats, my problem is when I remove the current seats the airbag warning light will come on. Has anyone done this conversion? and if so how did you overcome the airbag light problem? Over to you.

You need to place a 3.9 or 4 ohm resister along the line and you will need to use an airbag reset tool (B200) to turn the light off. I have one (in the midlands) you will need to keep the pre tensioner. I have fitted several aftermarket seats to the existing runners and sorted the air bags out

You can get BMW to turn the light off and some garages, normal cost is between £30 - £80 depending where you are, I just call it a drink

Thanks for that, seems a bit more of a job than I first thought. I have been offered two new Sparco seats for £150 (without brackets)and need to do something before I'm crippled with the standard seats.

Its not a huge job really. You just need the B200, resister, seats, seat brackets, and time + tools

  • get the brackets
  • take the old seat and runner apart
  • make the brackets fit the runner
  • add the pre-tensioner to the mix
  • resister in line
  • Fix seats
  • Clear your air bag codes

We are not 100% sure but believe that the air bags no longer work when a fault is detected and the light comes on

I added a snap-off steering wheel to my RX8 a few years back and to disable the airbag light I just added a couple of resistors smile That way the system still works fine apart from the ones you've removed (obviously!!)

For reference its a bit more than a resistor in the mini to remove the steering wheel

Just found this thread after a search.
I may be buying a mini one today that has the airbag light on would you be able to look at it for me if I bring it to you some time?
Plenty of beer tokens in it for you (I have a dislike of main dealers)

Thanks
Howard.
