I don't have any route advice but i have driven to Italy [in summer]. Snow chains are mentioned a lot to anyone considering crossing Alps this time of year. Apparently its a legal requirement to have them with you. The main routes [Mont Blanc,Gotthard] are mostly kept clear due to trucks needing to use them. It may be better to fly out.

Out of interest, how long does it take to drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel?
Driving through the Alps rather than over might be a consideration for our return leg from Italy next July (only might mind), but I think I stand the risk of not only deafening us but everyone around us too!

Tip: 'refresh' the air in the car before entering and then drive through with the vents on recirculate if possible, 'coz the air in there is rank...
