Cheers!!!

Vicenza, I am heading over 2nd Jan, starting on the 7th....cant wait, really, really can't...

Have spotted a Forester Turbo, which might be purchased!!

Insurance? As bad as made out? Is this why everyone drives 500's?

Internet? Any good? Am planning to keep my business here going which will require a fair bit of connectivity...roughly how much??

Selling my car over here, so am looking to buy a motor quick smart...something that is mountain friendly, that I can sleep in if need be!

Cheers!

Good for you, it is as great a place to live as it can be frustrating at times. Good car choice, I had an Imprezza Turbo the first coupled of years I was here. Insurance is pricey but I have used Italsure the last 5 or so - they seem ok. I've never had to claim mind you, so haven't really tested them. You'll have no worries with Internet, plenty of broadband packages to suit your needs - I think we pay around €25/month for up to 7mb/s unlimited.

I'm not sure about Vicenza but when I started looking for somewhere to rent it was not unusual to find an unfurnished place minus a kitchen! Something to be aware of.

Mountain roads are all excellent and they keep them in good condition...snow tyres and 4wd and you'll be set. I have a golf and a touran both on winter tyres and have never been stuck (only 2wd) and I head to the mountains a lot.

Petrol/ Diesel is pricey here - it's the only way to tax everyone hence the high price.

Haggle for everything and cash is still king! Good luck with the move.

Sounds good - not sure where the best or closest ski area for you would be. We tend to head up to Falcade or Arabba but that's a fair bit further East than you. We'll figure it out and you're more than welcome to join.

I used to be up in the mountains every weekend but since having a kid with another on the way it has slowed me down a bit. Still, should be able to sneak in a morning tomorrow!

Drop me an email closer to the time or if you need any further help.

Cheers

I moved back from Italy this summer after 9 years. Just a few tips.

To buy a car you need your residenzia i.e. you need a house and then need to be registered with the commune. Could take a couple of months, so try and get a car form your employer until you are able to buy one.

Car insurance is expensive. Italsure are worth looking at, but you need to budget well over £1000 per year, maybe closer to £2000.

The government introduced a tax on foreign wealth last year. You are liable for 1% on all foreign wealth, this includes property, savings and pension funds. Don't assume that you can avoid it, a lot of my ex colleagues have been hauled in front of the Guarda Finanza this year!

Check that your company treats your T.F.R properly. T.F.R. is a fund that you contribute to (8% or salary I think), the company matches that and you get this when you leave. I have heard of companies not bothering to do this for foreign employees. Also, you should have the option to either keep it as cash, or invest it in a pension fund. Probably better to keep it as cash.

Finally, remember to claim split year treatment from HMRC when you do your UK tax return in April.

If I was thinking of moving to Italy next year, with the intention of doing over there what I'm already doing over here (freelance stuff that isn't location-dependent), how easy/hard is that from a bureaucratic point of view? I have a ltd company in the UK at the moment. Would I be able to continue earning my living through that, paying taxes in the UK, or would I have to hook myself up lock stock and barrel to the Italian equivalent of a limited company, paying tax in Italy instead? Italy would become my primary residence, but I'd be keeping a 'foothold' property in the UK.
If I wanted to set up an additional holiday-type business when I'm over over there, is that as nightmarishly complex as the internet guides suggest?
