Sorted. New belt £5.70 and fitted in less tha an hour including getting tools out and putting away again.

There's a knack and once you spot it, its a doddle.

Might even have a go at the rear wiper that packed up.
Need any elastoplast now?

No, fortunately I managed without skinning my knuckles- for once.

Also have sorted the rear wiper by threading a new main suuply wire from the boot into the tailgate.

THREAD RESURRECTION ALERT!

Couldn't resist this.

I was coming back from the M1 J20 along the A427 towards harborough and I caught a line of slower moving traffic. As I started to overtake the line of about 4 cars a black focus with twin rear 'zorts pulled out and I had to anchor on to avoid hitting it.

I then dropped it a cog and sat on his rear bumper past all the traffic and he tried to take off into the distance. Only problem for him was that I was having to feather the throttle to avoid hitting the back end of his "fast" machine. hehe I was giggling like a 4 year old and could see his puzzled expression in the mirror. Followed him all the way back with him trying to get the drop on me out of the villages but he just couldn't. Admittedly I didn't have the grunt to pass him but ....... smile

Hope he's not too suicidal this evening. I wonder how much he has spent on that thing?

I really must get some stickers made up that make it clear its only 993cc!

Not the fastest GTti around as its bog standard and done 181,000 miles on the original engine without a rebuild but it can still put a smile on most people's faces.

Its the mid range acceleration whee it really shines! nuts

Failed MOT on:
Front Brake balance (sticky caliper)
rusty brake pipes both sides,

O/S CV gaiter split

Advisory
Windscreen stone chip
perished ARB bush
Exhaust has part of the system slightly deteriorated (???)
o/s front brake pipe slightly corroded
rusty fuel pipe
O/S headlight chipped (been like that for years.

Not bad for a neglected 18 year old car thats done 180K miles.

My back is knacked at the moment so should be interesting trying to sort this out.

Anyone recommend a good brake pipe kit?

In fairness Gary, there is no perceptible pull on the brakes and as I'm sure you are aware the MOT standards for corrosion on brake pipes tends to, shall we say, err well upon the side of caution. When I took the Rover for MOT earlier this year the tester said that one of the front pipes was corroded but he managed to clean it up with some abrasive paper to his satisfaction.

If there was any doubt about the integrity of the brakes I would have checked them out, but thank you for your concern.

Miss Diane : was obviously so that Pupp and Spurting Bare can hurl insults and abuse at me!

Funnily enough, brake integrity was on my mind near Cambridge yesterday when I drove through the middlle of a pile of pig iron lying in the road that I think used to be a truck rotor and pads (whole kit n caboodle in bits in the carriageway, maybe a tad on the other side of corrosion-caution).

Just pulling your chain mate and have no idea what Di's on about smilenothing new in me failing to pick up no-tail cues 'though

I shall consider my chain to be ever so slightly yanked! smile

I nearly hit a load of wood in the carriageway on the A6 t'other day. Car behind me did hit it and I saw it go flying in the air (the wood not the car). Hope it ddn't hit anything/anyone.
